Multiple Iguanas..... What's the deal???

Heather Oct 03, 2003 05:24 PM

Ok, I KNOW You can't house more then one ig together (usually) without problems. I know this. But My Mom raised a question today that stumped me. I've see lots of videos and pics of Igs rescuers that have rooms with lots of igs just all wandering together. They don't seem to have any problems housing LOTS and LOTS of Igs togehter.... So what's the deal? How do they not have problems? I'm not trying to start anything. I'm honestly curious.....

Honestly, I have had NO problems housing two iguanas together for 4 years. In fact, they seem to rather enjoy living together.
It is rare, but can be done if you house them from when they are young.

I had two adult igs housed together, but they came together when i rescued them. a 5' male and a 3' female, both got along implicitly. In the few years that they had left to thier life together, neither faught or tried to copulate. If I had to say, i'd say they loved eachother.. when the female passed away, the male passed away soon after, much like a old couple. I dont know. I think most people think of two Igs together as two huge males fighting eachother, and that just isnt the case usually. It also depends on the igs personality and temprement. Theres always one way to find out, put two together and see what happens.. if they chill together great, if they fight, instant seperate.. most people dont think of that ...

A few years ago i had an old male iguana that was very sweet!I bought him a female of about 3 years old and it was love at the first sight! They were always together and she liked to sleep on his back!Soo sweet! When he died she died too without apparent reason 15 days after his death! That was really a love story! At the local petshop they have to sell a couple of igs like that too!Male and female that seem to love each other a lot!I think if you have a confirmed male and female that seem to like each other you can have 2 iguanas without problems. But its difficult to find already formed couples to be sold or adopted!

I do rescue, and altho we have lots of iguanas here, I can't imagine a room with LOTS and LOTS of iguanas freeroaming together. I have small groups (4-6) that do get along well together but they have a lot of space, multiple basking spots, and multiple feeding spaces. I'd never freeroam 2 male Green Iguanas in the same space yet I've had success with a male Green and a male Cyclura. It depends on the iguana's personality. Not all igs are willing to socialize well.

Heh, that bearded dragon is just too cute. I love those things.

Or is that one of the giant versions?
