Squeezing the life out of my hand; look how red my hand is! LOL!

He has some odd markings, sort of almost a striped gopher but not quite. He is about three years old. A friend gave him to me.

Nice normal SD. Sometimes the base color and pattern combination gives them a striped appearance. Any info on where he originated? It's a good thing I don't live any closer to SD range than I do. Would probably have several of those too. Just have a lone female now...

Well, I thought he didn't look like a Pacific! LOL! He was found in Santa Barbara near the coast while my friend and his cohorts where out herping a couple years ago. so now I have an annectens! I had wanted a striped Pacific male but my friend gave me this guy; will keep him anyway as he is a nice animal. I guess he will be a bachelor as I have no annectens females.

He was caught in southern Monterey County about 15 miles south of Monterey and about 5 miles inland from the coast near Point Lobos.

According to Patrick,

...your snake is from the far northern part of SD range - the further inland, the more they tend to intergrade with the Pacifics. Looks like a classic SD from the photo but who knows, could have a little Pacific mixed in.

Well, I have a similar issue as I have a "bachelorette" and no suitable male...

She is beautiful! Too bad we live so far apart. You have Ahnuld, too!

Your bachelorette looks a lot like my pair of "Pacifics", what with the red between the very well defined blotches. I am beginning to wonder if maybe I have more San Diegos and less Pacifics than I originally thought.

Hard to know for sure as they have attributes of both. Very attractive Pits at any rate. Any more (it seems) the CB market is so stacked with aberrant snakes (morphs and perhaps hybrids), it can be hard to know for sure unless you know the breeder and linages are known and communicated.

Precisely why I prefer wild caught locality gophers and bulls, preferably at the neonate stage. I've seen enough of them flattened along the Hwys that any feelings of guilt for taking a live one every now and then is entirely absent.

I think this is my only for sure CB blotched Pacific (Gonzo).
Thanks for the great link! I have carefully examined all the photos of both p.catenifer annectens and p.catenifer catenifer. Whatevever my snakes are, I am still very happy with them. Heck, I have some pyromelana woodini that are not called woodini anymore, as that has become an obsolete term.

One of my "obsolete" snakes. LOL!

What is the locale of your annectens?

My female SD is another fine product of the Home Grown Herps business. His site was very user friendly in that he had photos of the adult breeders and individual photos of all the available neonates.

The photos of his two adult SD breeders (advertised as normals) attracted me initially. His female had the exact same coloration as mine and I was fortunate to get her as the pick of the litter. That was in 2009, a year after I got Ahnuld.

The neonate SDs from that clutch were listed as normals, possible het for anery. So there you go, I have no earthly idea what the linage is or what she may be crossed with or vice versa. A cool snake though and special to me as I am sure yours are to you...
