Illustrated story dedicated to people that want to have/raise more than 1 iguana!

Flavia Guimaraes Oct 03, 2003 06:09 PM

Once upon a time there were 3 juvie igs that shared since birth the same cage! They lived in a warm, sunny and humid country and were very happy! They shared the same cage facilities, like good and healthy food, perfect basking places, etc... without fights! Their mom was very happy with them and tought they made a happy and peaceful community!Their mom used to post their photos everywhere and to inform people that to have more than 1 iguana was not a problem!

A few months after the previous photo was taken the juvies reached their sexual maturity and started to fight. On the beggining their MOM didnt notice they were fighting because they fought when she was not looking! Then, one morning she saw some spikes were missing on TREX's back and that THOR had the mouth full of blood! Then she realized time had come to separate them!So she was obliged to buy 2 more 7Feet cages what was very expensive without mentioning she needed to find room to put those additional new cages!
Even caged separatedly the iguanas could still feel each others scent and that was enough to enrage them! They started to hit their bodies against their cages walls and to injure their snouts!
The photo below shows how upset and enraged becomes TREX because of the presence of the others male igs in the house.

THOR also now hates TREX and if he could he would have already killed him! He already tryied to kill TREX but their MOM arrived on time to avoid the murder!
The photo below shows how aggressive THOR becomes when he sees TREX!

Godzilla used to be the sweetest ig an ig's mom can dream! He was the only ig that lived indoors most of the time, sharing the human kids bed! He was docile and affectionated! When the fights between TREX and THOR started he became very nervous and thought that time had come to show to them that he, Godzilla, was the big boss! So he became the most aggressive of them all and started to attack everybody including his own MOM! After having bitten her several times he was adopted out! His MOM still cries when she remembers how swweet he used to be!
The photo below shows Godzilla attacking his MOM!

Even when juvie iguanas seem to live together in peace and harmony their behavior changes when they reach sexual maturity. To my igs that happened when they were 2 years and a half, almost 3 years old.Sudenly they started to attack each other and im in the sad position now to be looking for good homes to adopt them out!Its very difficult to control the rivary and jealousy between adult male igs and the constant presence of a foe can upset them so much they can stop eating or they can become so aggressive that they can attack you or a member of your family! I know that there are people that keep multiple male igs in their houses but those igs, i suppose, must be kept on " jails" like tigers to dont attack each other! Thats not what i wanted when i decided to have an iguana! I wanted a free roaming pet, relaxed and affectionated and i destroyed that dream when i bought my second male iguana!

The photo below shows Godzilla when he was sweet, happy and affectionated! Before TREX and THOR decided to fight and he became wild and aggressive!

I know this has been your experience, but certainly not mine. My adult igs have long since reached sexual maturity and still enjoy being around each other. Both my male iguana and my female iguana are over 4 years old and nearly 5 feet long. My male rhino iguans is about 3 years old and is has been very pleasant to this point. They have plenty of space. They have a very large cage in a very large room. They also free roam on a daily basis when I come home from work. They also have a very large outdoor cage, which I put them all in at the same time. Not one of my igs have ever attacked each other.

I am not saying that this could never change. However, I have had enough experience with iguanas to know that there personalities are not always the same.

It is often easy to come to a conclusion based on your experience, but others may experience things differently. It is thus false to assume that all iguanas will act a certain way because ours do.

You said you have a male and a female? Well i was talking about raising males igs together!

You have a male and female of the same species, and another ig of a different species. Flavia was dealing with 3 male igs of the same species, completely different picture. I can guarentee if you introduced another male into your bunch, you'd have at least one dead ig before long if left together. I still feel bad for Flavia its so hard to give pets away, even when its for the best. No matter what, I'm always convinced no matter how good the proof they are fine, they are better off with me!

You can call me a coward but Godzilla almost got my face (my nose!) several times and i was afraid one day he would get it!He was becoming more and more smart and his attacks were getting more and more wild and more close if you understand what i mean!He " almost" got me several times and i was pretty sure i would not continue to be lucky forever! He is OK, now his new owner has a house with a huge garden where he can walk around and bask under the sun whenever he wishes!
