The Milk-a-thon: Seriously good stuff.

SunHerp Mar 01, 2012 09:28 AM

You guys are awesome! I'm stoked to see the activity on the forum lately! The milk-a-thon was sorely needed, so I'd like to extend thanks to Brian Mason for getting the thing rolling. Man, there are some excellent animals in the collections of the forum members's aren't there? It was a blast to see a bunch of captive stock folks' are (or were) working with and some wild critters, too. It sure has made March that much easier to bear!

Here's a parting shot of me (and Dell's dog Bob) just after a photo session with a nice multistrata we found just a few minutes from our homes.

I meant to say, "It made February easier to get through" not March. March just started. Sometimes I even impress myself.

Cole, I have thought about taking my dog in the field too and was wondering---do you guys ever worry about Bob getting tagged by a buzztail? I think my dog might shove his nose too close to a hot animal.

Joe, I've never seen Bob get very interested in any snakes we've found, if it doesn't have fur and a tail he's like, eck scales.
We have had a number of dogs with us while herping and fortunately we've never seen a bite from a buzz tail. Now that I've said that out loud, we'll have one of our dogs get bit.

They do however have an uncanny way of sitting on the exact rock you want to flip. "Hey! Get off, get off, Gdamit, get off of there, go on, go on."

Too funny Dell!,...not a care in the world for Bob..LOL!

Hey, was the snake pretty cool and sluggish from just being flipped under a cool nook?. Otherwise I'm surprised the snake didn't BOLT right off the rock with the next thing that moved if it was fairly warm. Or did you give it a tiny chip of Vicodin or something prior to the photo session?..

I might have to give my dog a chance then. Thanks for the information. That rock looks like a good'en!!! I bet you guys have found quite a few under that slab! Doug is right, most snakes I have caught and put on top of the rock just try to get away. You guys are the snake whisperers. (is that a word? LOL)

Joe, the problem I have up here with taking the dog is deer ticks. The things seem to be everywhere I go lately. If it wasn't for them, the dog would be with me almost every time I go out!

Crap, I forgot about those pesky things!! I do put frontline on my dog, but that does not mean the ticks cannot get a ride to my car on the dog prior to getting some frontline in them. I HATE TICKS. Been treated twice for LD. Southern MD is loaded with ticks. I few places I go are rediculous. I always were permithren treated cloting now, and that handles them for the most part. Chiggers too, now they are some serious fun!!

Couldn't agree more...some great animals were posted... great way to pass the month of February,but...

I can't help but wonder if the end of the Milk-a-thon is the reason I'm now experiencing the biggest snow storm of the winter season... milk-a-thon ends... storm starts... surely some connection.

Seriously... great post/posts. Thanks for starting it Brian!

...who contributed or who just stopped by to check out the pics.

It was excellent to see the variety and experience "milksnake revival" in enthusiasm.

Yeah, we got to see some really nice milks over the A-thon.
Of all the animals we saw that black and white L. t. triangulum Mason put up made the biggest impression on me.
