Almost solid black! I like the red dot on the first gray band of the Sanderson. Is that an East Sanderson?

Thanks Jorge! I gotta take a good outdoor pic of her. Excuse the lame in-cage pic.
I had lost the parental breeder registry concerning where in Sanderson it hails from, a few pcs ago, as Damon S. had sent it to me after I received the snake back in 2003.

To the micro locality guys in the Alterna forum it is. So are mine I guess, since I don't have documentation going back to the person who caught the parental line. I bet they still sell just the same, if not better. Most of the true locality ones, are fugly. "Most" not all, there are plenty nice ones. I will be needing a male E. Sanderson by next season, but since I don't have pedigree papers on the females, the male won't need them either.

Calm down Beavis!
Didn't you see the "lol" at the end?
And you are right about one thing...Alterna sell regardless if they are generics or not.
But....always a but, lol...Many, I mean MANY wild alterna are stunning. Fugly is your opinion with some, but many find that more attractive than the bright oranges and dare I say...blues....lol

Beavis?!? What the heck? This place is waaaay too touchy lately.

I just read my post again, just in case I may have said something that could have come across in the wrong way? I don't think it was abrasive in any way? I was merely stating my opinion on the whole Papers thing, for the Alterna. "L O L ."

Many, maybe even most, of the best looking graybands I have seen were wild caught. By best I mean brightest orange, lightest gray, cleanest colors, etc. Captive borns are way more consistent as far as there being a higher percent of good looking captive borns ones but the mind blowing one of a kind specimens are often wild caught.

I've spent long hours sifting thru archived pictures of locality Alterna, on several of the Alterna sites, and Yes I have seen some incredible looking snakes. I guess my statement comes from checking the classified ads for quite some time. So are the mind blowing ones only sold to buddies, or are they becoming a thing of the past. I rarely get excited looking at the Alterna ads lately when it comes to locality anyway. Now having said that all but one of my Alterna is locality. They're just not Alterna Kennel Club registered, lol. Sorry for the corny joke.

Aaron Mar 06, 2012 08:49 AM

I guess the best ones usually are sold to friends, if they're sold at all. Most people I know won't sell any wc grayband - too much sentimental value. But awesome ones are definately not a thing of the past. They still get caught and there's many produced every year but I guess alot depends on what you consider mind-blowing. One thing to consider is the colors often don't fully come in until they're a year to 18 months old so with cb babies you're always taking a chance. Seeing the adults and comparing clutchmates helps.

Wow, those are very nice, Billy. Love the colors on the Sanderson's and the black one is amazing. Does that darkness come in over time or are they born like that?

I wanted to touch on this so I wil answer for Billy and hope he doesn't get too upset.

The black comes in over time. Not like a melanistic thayeri that hatches out nearly solid black but more like a black phase mex mex that ontogenetically darkens.

So, with that being said are the dark alterna and dark mex mex truly melanistic? I don't know, but they sure as heck aren't recessive like melanistic thayeri.

Thanks, John. I wouldn't know what to call them either. I bought a juvi Grey band a long time ago that looked a lot like Billy's Sandersons, except in the orange there were darker speckles, rather than lighter ones. His orange darkened up quite a bit and the closer to the tail you get, the darker the red bands got. They were completely black by the time they got to the tail. The gray bands didn't darken at all. I hated the look of the snake at that point and got rid of it. If all the bands would have darkened to black, it would have been nice.

That one actually looks nice to me. The one I had had more orange in the first 2/3 of the body. They gradually got darker the closer they got to the tail. Maybe I didn't give it long enough to darken in on the other bands? I had for at least 4 years.

Good post John!!
Yea, the Black Lozier Canyon, at birth and at a year old, looked like a very dirty blairs phase alterna. Over time, the orange bands filled in with black.
It was really cool to watch!!
