Sterlings at 21 Months

maizeysdad Mar 05, 2012 06:08 PM

I missed out on the 20 month update, because it was Superbowl Sunday, and I am a rabid Giants fan, and was too swept up in ecstasy to function.

The Sterling momma sure looks like we'll be producing in the next few months. Here's hoping we get to spread the gene around this year.

Here's a few Sterlings and a few hets on their 21 month birthday.

First up, Sterling male #3

Next, Pos Het female #2

This is Pos Het female #5

And finally, this is Sterling male #2

I would do terrible things to obtain one of these guys!

Er... or just wait patiently.
Flawless, amazing-looking animals.

I was just curious how you managed(or plan to manage) this group of animals. Are you breeding the males to unrelated females first? Their mother? Their sisters? (when the time comes) I'm sorry if that was an intrusive question, I simply just always wondered what I would do if I were in a similiar position. Thanks. Mike Panichi

First step is back to mom, to partially establish that the trait is genetic. Next step is breeding Sterling males to unrelated females. The outcome of all Hets, combined with the evidence of Sterlings in the Sterling x Mom litter, will incontrovertibly "prove" the gene as a simple recessive trait.

The initial unrelated females will be super hypo, and albino, so the hets will have more potential than just het sterling.

There may some instances of sib x sib pairings if legislation goes badly for us. I may need to get the gene moved out to more states before interstate traffic becomes a felony.

Its all very interesting and I wish you the best. As far as the legislation thing goes, scroll up a couple of posts. There are those in here that have it all figured out for us already!!! No need to respond to that last one, LoL. I think your project is outstanding and I love your animals. Great job with updating us on their growth and progress as well. Take care. Mike Panichi
