Can't help but notice, you are using rock for substrate. I was thinking of doing this too. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The rocks are for the photos...I use shredded Aspen for substrate......
Rocks would not be easy to keep clean and I don't think they'd help with isolating a hot spot or thermal gradient as well as deep Aspen.
