nickpurvis Oct 03, 2003 10:39 PM

Hi im going to a reptile show soon and am looking at getting a pair of geckos.Im leaning toward a pair of tokays of goldens.how long do tokays have to be to breed and make eggs.same question with the golden too.also since most vendors have their tokays and goldens in deli cups with paper towls on the bottom how do I see if their a male or female.thanks.

Breeding age can depend on each gecko, but prob between 9 months and a year old. The venders should be able to help sex them if their old enough. Males will have a row of preanal pores much more obvious than a female.

If they sell geckos at shows I would think they would know enough to sex them. After youre used to it its pretty easy, its just kind of difficult in pics sometimes. My six months olds are between 7-8 inches snout to end of tail but each gecko can grow at diff rates, so Im not to sure if thats a good indication. Anything over 6 inches would possibly be able to tell sex for sure.

Both species can breed at the age of 13-18 months.
But both species need a long acclimatization period if introduced to a new tank, independent from their age.
For goldens it may take 2-5 months before they start breeding in a new tank, for tokays it may need more than a year.
Some animals start sooner, but there´s not guarantee.
There are almost no female goldens in the pet trade. Females stay smaller, are less brightly coloured and have smaller heads but well supplemented speciemsn have calcium sacs at their cheeks. In male goldens you see stronger tubercles and hemipenis buulges at the tail base. From below, of course status of pores makes up the difference.
All this applies for Tokays as well, but its no colour difference in the sexes and you won ´t see hemipenis bulges in male tokays.

Hope that helps

Ingo
