is a blood right for me?

mcompton1973 May 27, 2003 09:53 AM

I know that this is a question that can not really be answered, but I could not think of another title that was right either.

I am looking to get a new snake. I have had a ball in the past, and loved her to pieces...but this was while I was a Marine, and I had to go to Okimawa...amazingly, the Japaneese are not real interested in you bringing your own snakes to thier country....they seem to have enough to keep them happy over there.

Anyways, I am snakeless and have been for about 5 years now, and want to get another snake. I have been thinking about another ball, but would maybe like something a little different. I was looking into a corn snake....but they seem to be a little quicker, and faster...I kind of liked how slow and docile my ball was. I know NOTHING about the blood right now, and would like to....

so...
#1...anyone lead me to some good care sheets or web sites with general info?

#2...anyone have any other ideas to look into...here is what I am looking for. A smaller type snake (5 feet or so as an adult). Something a little different (everyone has ball pythons). Something a little more colorful. Something known to be docile and tolerate being held...I know no snake really LIKES it...lol.

Thanks in advance for the help....

I can only tell you the humidity thing is a trick. Cant be too wet or else you get scale problems. Cant be too dry or else you get scale problems. Very delicate balance. I also would like to point out that bloods are pretty tame. And even if they do bite you, take your licks and try again.
Once you get the humidity down pat, its just as easy as a Ball, trust me.

I prefer bloods over balls. They're prettier and... they don't ball. Mine is very tame right now but I've only had her for a month. If you can take care of a ball I think you can take care of a blood, though.

I agree about the humidity, it is pretty much the only difficult thing with bloods, except maybe cage size. If you play around with the humidity for awhile then you can usually get the hang of it pretty quick, at least I did. They do need pretty large cages as adults for their short size, but this isn't too much of a problem if you get big rubbermaid storage containers. They are great snakes if you just want to sit and watch tv with them or take them outside because they are so slow, at least when they are out of water! Just go to google.com and type in "blood python care sheet" and you'll get a few good care sheets. One peice of advice I'll give you is get a young one. It is amazing watching them grow and change colours! Sumatran short-tailed pythons and Borneo short-tailed pythons are pretty much blood pythons in a smaller package. They also have different colors (black and brown).
Good luck,
Adam
