My Favorite Leonis

Jlassiter Mar 19, 2012 10:06 PM

With the full spectrum of colors and endless variability L. leonis have to offer I think the contrasting colors the white leonis phase morphs exhibit make them my personal favorites....I think I like them a bit more than the melanistics and are possibly more rare.....

Thanks Ross....
I agree with you and I cannot take any credit for him other than raising him up halfway...LOL
He was produced by Bob Hansen from Dan Vermilya's "great white line" leonis animals.

I have yet to find a suitable female for him but I may breed him to a neat aberrant "leopard" leonis. That would make for a neat project possibly....

Sounds like a neat project! Is the "great white line" in line with the great white hope? LOL Just had to say that. Is the great white line the result of selective breeding?

LOL....Yes it is a line bred trait and not easily reproduced even with two white adults....it is somewhat difficult to truly line breed predictable offspring such variable animals.....

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That's what's really neat about those snakes, their variability.

That's why I enjoy them but I've heard some folks say that is what they dislike about them.....What fun is it knowing what is going to hatch out of every egg?

I wouldn't even like an entire clutch of white leonis.....

I like surprises without all the genetic morphs.......

Thanks man...I was lucky to have gotten him.
He is certainly holding onto his bright white color at 18 months of age or so......

Prehistorically speaking maybe.....
What about Pale Milk?.....lol

But these "great white line" leonis morphs were line bred from untainted lines....

Thanks Thomas

pyromaniac Mar 20, 2012 09:25 AM

Absolutely stunning, and still staying white at 18 months! It must have taken many generations to breed out the ontogenetic change.

My adult 3 and 1/2 year old pyro; some resemblance but your thayeri has a very different pattern with the red going all the way over the back instead of the typical pyro flames against a night sky (black crossovers). Also the thayeri saddles are sort of jagged and pointy at the bottom whereas the pyro's are smoother and rounder near the bottom.

I could see where folks would think your thayeri had a mixed background but I don't think so. Just persistent line breeding. Hope you find a suitable mate for him.

Well..the main difference between this leonis and any pyro in my words is....
This White Leonis has a white ground color with narrow red saddles outlined in black. These saddles taper towards the ventral scales. The variability is mainly with the ground color on these animals. Nearly all leonis phase specimens have red saddles outlined in black...some have washed out red and reduced black though...but the red saddle coloration is somewhat a constant as are the black borders.

Pyros have more evenly spaced bands of similar width...Much like a lot of triangulum...What do you consider the "ground color" of a Pyro? I believe it to be the white.
Triangulum folks count RBR and sometimes call that the ground color....I don't think the red is ever the ground color on Lampros. The red is the saddle color. Even on a banded species like Ruthveni, Zonata, Hondurans, etc.....

Hi John,

nice thayeri...like allways!
Get a female with very thin black bands for him...

A ha!
A reduced black white leonis.....Hmmmmm
Sounds cool......

Like this female?....she's already grey/green so it may not be too hard to breed that out of them....lol

Dennis...
Here's Bob's Clutch pics from that 2010 clutch....The one I have is on the bottom/right. The one on the top right is killer as well as the top/left. That one on the top/left doesn't look to be bright white but I love those hallow saddles.....

Those are cool pics John. That first one is special with those hollow saddles and the fact that there isn't as much red at all makes for a neat looking animal.
