International hobbyist - assistance

ptthr Mar 25, 2012 08:53 PM

Hey guys,

New to the forum.

I am a boa hobbyist. i live in trinidad in the caribbean. the people in my contry who have snakes usually have wild caught specimens.

i have owned two boa constrictors and a rainbow boa. all of which were wild caught specimens that i acquired.

i gave the snakes to my cousins during college. now i am a medical doctor settled here and i want to take back up my hobby but in the right way....that is ...using captive bred specimens ONLY

this means i have to import these from the US...but its hard to find sites that allow me to order snaked unless buying in excess of large sums of money....

it seems its unheard of to purchase one snake at a time for international shipment...

any ideas????

I have a minimum order policy for international orders to set proper expectations from the onset. Cites paperwork, customs stamps outgoing, freight and taxes on your end will easily set you back $600-750usd. This could be for 1-100 snakes. So it only makes sense to have it be a sizable order. Ad barring health certs, which may apply depending on your country as well as perhaps an import permit on your end as well.

Happy your back into the hobby! Now that the above clarifies the financials. My suggestion since you asked, is as a new doctor you're being smart in budgeting your projects. You live in a region Where boas occur. Work with some wild caught and acclimate them and get your start that way. We all have imports here that we work with and it's loads of fun. Enjoy and welcome again!

What do you mean by 1-100 snakes ?

Here in Trinidad its but legal to keep wild caught snakes so it would be illegal.....though ppl do it. but I am trying togo totally legal

what i mean is the cites documents and port charges by customs brokers is a flat fee it does not go up or down depending on quanitites. The freight is a different story as that is based on weight and volume.

The legality issue was not clear in your post. so you may want to consult the authorities if they will allow the importation of any boas. and if so, how will they determine what was imported and not for future inspections to your facilities. you will have to weigh and consider all these factors and more, and make your own decision.

oh ok.

that means i should wait and purchase all the specimens at once so as to be economical. i get you. thnx!
