Callling...volume??

Gholden Oct 04, 2003 12:59 AM

Hi everyone,

I'm very interested in setting up a viv for some frogs (possibly Dendrobates leucomelas or D. tinctorius) but there is a slight problem. I must have something that is on the quiet side of things. I already had to find new homes for my two parakeets because they were too loud . I'm not new to animal keeping (I have kept various species of lizards, skinks, birds, a dog, a cat, and fish) but these will be my first amphibians. They don't have to be completely silent, but rather, at least more quiet than a parakeet...

So anyway the question is, are there any quieter species of dart frogs that are good for beginners? D. tinctorius? leucomelas? And if so, can you compare the volume of their call to something I might be familiar with?

Thanks for any help!

Leucs have one of the loudest call for pdf. Its not that loud but you will be able to hear it if you are in the room. They have a very beautiful call though. Here is a link to a wav file of their call. http://www.doylesdartden.com/leucomelas.html

Not sure about tincs but if they are anything like the azureus you wont hear them at all

I would have to say Azureus, you won't hear them. Now my Leucs can be VERY loud. Some days my male wakes me up from the hallway.

Hi,
I have some p.vittatus that are in the basement and when the male gets cranking I can hear it in the living room easy.My auratus you have to be almost by the tank to hear the male call. The imitators have a call that can be heard over the TV right next to their tank but none of these calls would be close to the squacking of a parakeet. The crickets in the basement are louder then the frogs are.I love hearing the frogs calling and it doesn't seem to bother the family if that is what you are up against................Mark W.
