Zane & Zafina Lock It Up!

pyromaniac Mar 26, 2012 09:40 AM

OOPS! Couldn't resist at least one breeding this season...photo last night.

From left to right: Zafina, Zane, and Zuni who is mostly under saucer. Photo three weeks ago.
I took Zuni out a few weeks ago as she was smaller than the rest of the trio, and seemed not happy or at ease. Since then she has had her post brumation shed, by herself. Am not breeding her as she is too small in my estimation. Zane and Zafina are the ones in lock. Zafina has not had any post brumation shed, but they mated anyway last night. This was a for sure lock, although catching the penetration was hard because of the camera angle. I didn't think they would breed until after the post brumation shed, although I think Zane would have mated with a bungee cord, he was that horny! Also, Zafina was looking sort of bulgy and full like she was ovulating.

Sweet, the black on that one is awesome. I'm getting some more in a few weeks, I've been slipping on these guys.

That's great! Congrats!

And they were right on time to. This being an early breeding season for us and probably snakes in the wild to.

I have had about 11 Florida king clutches laid and incubating already.

Thanks, everyone!
I don't feel so bad about this breeding since all but one of the last year's babies have been eating live pinks since coming out of brumation. The littlest baby ate two pinks last night, breaking the winter fast. The last baby still has yet to eat (although he did eat last summer) so I just keep leaving the pinks in a little cup in the cage for him to find. I was just reluctant to have yet more difficult babies, but as it turns out they are thriving. These creatures are very seasonal cycle responsive, so mainly it is a matter of me learning their natural proclivities and being patient.

A clump of babies with full bellies. ;D Photo taken a few days ago. They were all brumated together as well.

I think that depends on your geographical location.
My pyros, zonata, mexicana, ruthveni, knobs, alterna never "shut down" for the winter. I have to stop feeding the adults prior to brumation....Temps in October/November are in the 80s here where I live.

But it is great to see you are learning from your snakes.
