Eastlandpets Oct 04, 2003 01:35 AM

Has any one had success with the captie breeding of the eastern glass lizard? i've read that they are rarely captive bred, but things like that are always changing. any tips would be wonderful.

I e-mailed you a little after you made this post, but don't know if you got it, as I never got a reply. I have a few eastern glass lizards in my possesion. Three in fact, that I have had all summer and are doing great. I was considering attempting to breed them, but I don't know the first thing about sexing them, and have so much other stuff going on that I don't believe it'll fit. I hope you have luck though.

yes, i did get your email, and i'm sorry i haven't replied yet, but i've been crazy busy. i'm glad to hear someone is keeping these things. where are you located? out of curiosity? anyway, as far as sexing goes, it's bound to be tough. if i remember my classification correctly, the glass lizards of the US are related to skinks, which are notoriously difficult to sex. the only suggestion i'd have, which you've probably already thought of, would be to look for bulges. but that'd be difficult to do objectively with out a good standard to look at. short of that, look at behavior... but i don't know the first thing about Ophiosaur interactions. regardless, i would highly reccomend that you attempt breeding. in my opinion, O. ventralis are much more attractive than the european equivalent, which enjoyed quite a bit of popularity for a while. the only thing standing in the way of these guys is the problem of breeding.

good luck-

Yeah, I hadn't really thought of it much. My two smaller ones, which I house together, and a bit larger one get a long fine. Earlier this spring I had caught a couple of larger ones, and killed the other. I haven't witnessed any other "fights" between them. Do males tend to territorial? If so, this could explain what happened between the two. I've looked them over real well, and haven't picked out anything that might differentiate between the sexes. Tail length really has no play, since I've only seen two lizards that didn't have regrown tails. And without normal leg configurations, and their lifestyles, I haven't noticed any body size differences or bulges. So it's beyond me. I wouldn't mind trying to bread them though, if I could for sure tell the difference between the sexes.
