Type Of King

atwood1184 Apr 02, 2012 11:26 AM

Just got my first King snake and i am trying to find out what kind of king it is I have looked at all different pictures and can not determine which one he is. The shop i got him at only had it marked as king and didn't know when i asked. Local shop not the greatest but has some cool animals.

"I Know in the white Spots it has like and orange or yellowish color"

Well, I will say that any orange-ish coloration is a good indication of the Eastern getula influence it likely has, but anything beyond that is simply unknown.

It would really suck in my opinion if it actually WAS an authentic Eastern king and the store didn't know this from whatever source they got it from, but that sort of thing happens ALL THE TIME and is very typical unfortunately.

Well, it certainly does seem to have at least a very good percentage of Eastern getula influence there from what I see.

Nothing more can really be concluded though unfortunately.

Very cool looking snake!

Well, to be quite honest, it's virtually impossible to identify that one with any certainty at all without knowing and seeing the parental stock lineage that produced it. I'd say the "kingsnake" (getula) label the store had on it is actually the most accurate label for it. It does "look" like and resemble what an aberrant Eatern king might look like, but I would have serious reservations about an awesome genuine aberrant Eastern king (L.g.getula) showing up at a pet store simply labeled as "kingsnake" anyway. I would bet Cal. king is very likely to be in it's genetic lineage if I were to guess. There are very few wacky aberrant Eastern kings in the hobby, but many countless THOUSANDS of aberrant patterned Cal. kings of endless types and combinations.

A good clear shot of the face/head would also possibly help indentify some subspecific features.

cheers, ~doug

Lol just kidding.. what everyone else said, nice snake.

Wanted to add that you may want to either provide a humid hide for that snake (plastic container, moist sphagnum moss or vermiculite, place partially over a heat pad) or soak it in no more than 1/4 inch deep of water for 5 minutes. Snake seem a tad dehydrated in the pic. Could be just the pic though. Good luck with it.
