Stumbling over hurdles

SouthernSerpent Apr 02, 2012 09:24 PM

Well, it's been a while since I've been on here. Nice to see the forums again. Not going to get into too many details, but I have dropped the wife due to many circumstances. One of the ones that irked me was the neglectful nature she picked up in regards to our animals while I was gone to work. So instead of having a partner, I am going it alone again. On all fronts. I lost a beautiful 6 foot hypo boa due to her placing an automatic air freshener near the enclosure. Took me a day or two to figure that out. She had locked with a normal male which I still have. Any way. Sorry to ramble. My half of the collection is still posted below. One question I have is what size do male bps usually hit breeding ready? I know when females hit 1700-2200 grams they are good to go. Can never keep the male weight in my head for some reason.

Btw I may be down, but not out. I can only go up from here on! Thanks for any help with my question.

I've heard of males locking at 400 grams...but usually 600 and up.

I believe most breeders start around 500 grams but you could also just check for plugs.

Thanks for the information. I was off on the low end for some reason.

I had a firefly male start breeding last season at 350gms continued to eat and was around 500gm by the end of the season. I was real easy on him and he still fathered 4 clutches.

I have an enchi butter doing the same this year - we will see if he fathers any clutches or not.

It doesn't hurt to try him out and see what he does. He will tell you if he is interested or not.

Sorry about the domestic issues - good luck with the snakes!

I have two male dbl het Albino Pieds hitting one female dbl het Albino Pied...one is 466 and the other is 472. Both still eat every week and when they stop eating I will pull them from the breedings. I don't think they will stop eating because its been about 2 months now...when I started using them they were around 325 grams.
Last year I couldnt get a male to breed under 600 grams and I have a 650 gram Ivory that wont touch a female...its up to the male...when he is ready he will go.
I have heard of others breeding males at 200 grams...

Hi,

Sorry for your losses. As the others stated, males will often go by the 400-600 gm range. Females will often start cycling at weights well below those you posted as well. Most of mine cycle initially at 1,200-1,500 gm range and I've had several go at 1,000 gms. Remember, if you provide conditions condusive to reproduction, they will let you know when they are ready. Don't be surprised if you notice cool seeking behavior and that reproductive "pale glow" at weights below those that you've mentioned. Good luck.

Will
