Put a little fiber in your king's diet

foxturtle Apr 03, 2012 11:17 PM

A few weeks ago we found a kingsnake in the canefields of Palm Beach County, FL that had an unusual lump in its stomach. At first the snake looked deformed, but after feeling the area, we discovered it had swallowed what felt like a 4 inch bolt.

We figured the snake would probably die if we left it like that. We palpated the object out of the snake's stomach and out its mouth.

A stick!

We figured the snake had consumed the stick by accident while invading a rodent's nest. It would be interesting to know whether he would have eventually passed or regurgitated the stick.

You weren't kidding about how big it was. I wonder if the breeders that give their snakes all the "choices" offer them that much fiber? Lol!

Nick, that is awesome!!! LOL. Man I love Getula. If only they got about four to five feet longer, then there would be no burm issues in FL. However, we would have to worry about our own butts then!!! My Sand kings are on mice already. Fastest growing snakes I have ever seen.

Nice of you to help the snake! How is it doing now?

foxturtle Apr 04, 2012 01:41 PM

We fed the snake a skink shortly after we retrieved the stick. He seemed to be doing fine, so we released him a couple days later.

That is just crazy! He was sure hungry, and some are worried about snakes ingesting shavings......
