more annulata

mikefedzen Apr 06, 2012 02:03 AM

With the exception of one pair my annulata don't really seem all that interested in breeding, but they all ate today so hopefully some breeding will happen next time I throw some together.

here's my 08' albino female grubbing.

Here's a 06' female annulata eating, she was so excited she was constricting her enclosure. This is the snake that was breeding with the het albino apricot male.

And a 08' or 09' annulata I got from Mitch Mulks last year.

When I put the mice in my spotted female's cage she was just soaking in the water bowl, I figured when I checked on her again I'd get a pic of her eating...

That spotted is awesome, I will be on the hunt for some of those this year. Any luck on finding the mate?

Unfortunately not, he's pretty much written off. In my experience it's best to try and forget about escapees, then one day when you're not thinking about them at all they pop up somewhere you'd never expect them and scare the hell out of you lol.

I fear his escape route from the snake room was the heat vent instead of going under the door... I'm sure I'll never know though.

how much do u feed ur milks? those pinkies look way small. u feed them more than one? my andean is only 16 inches and is eating hoppers. and urs look bigger than mine. am i wrong?

mikefedzen Apr 07, 2012 12:41 AM

The milks are pretty picky for me this time of year, some of them aren't eating at all, those that are eating will only eat small meals... My albino male will completely ignore hoppers but will eat 6 small fuzzies. I was also running out of small adult mice for that feeding so the adult milks were all offered rat pinkies instead. The 09 normal female annulata is probably not much bigger than your milk snake, she took 5 rat pinkies. The 06' normal I posted ate a small adult mouse for her last feeding but this feeding she took 6 or 7 pinky rats. As long as they eat something I'm happy.

Mike ,is it pretty common for triangulum to go off food in the spring time? I have all cb'11's so they're not sexually mature yet. All my hondurensis and sinaloae eat every time, but the albino nelsoni and campbelli are very picky and usually require a lot of effort and only eat about every couple weeks or so...

Drew,
I wouldn't say all milks go off feed in the Spring, the 2 nelson's I have are both eating nowadays, one is a 2010 one is a 2011, the 2011 one will eat 6 peach fuzzies per feeding no problem. In my opinion if a young snake only wants to eat every couple weeks it's not really comfortable with it's living situations... My young milks will eat every time food is offered once they're adjusted.

Make sure the snakes are parasite free (mites/ticks), make sure the temperature(s) are accurate (80-84 on the warm side), the snakes also need water and some really won't eat if thirsty. Also be certain the snakes aren't in shed phase, as a rule I don't disturb young milk snakes for any reason but feeding and cage cleaning. Holding a snake might make it not want to eat.

Also what kind of food are you offering... live or f/t? Are you just leaving the prey in there or are you wiggling it in the snakes' face with tongs? Young milks especially can be picky about live or f/t rodents, some need the movement to spark interest.

Mike, they are at an ambient temp of 80-83 deg. F day time around 76-79 deg F. at night around 35-45% humidity. They are housed in shoebox rack system w/ paper towel substrate and always have freshwater. Never feed the picky ones when they're in a shed. I mainly feed FT pinkies w/ tease feed on hemos but they both have refused live prey as well. I'm down to only 2 problem feeders, both are males. cb'11s one pueblan, one nelsoni.

mikefedzen Apr 16, 2012 05:46 PM

I think the problem might be the paper towels. That's one substrate I can't see a snake being comfortable on, though I assume it makes clean up easier with baby snakes. I'm sure they'll come around at some point!

Love that spotted female, Mike. Very lovely. Looking forward to seeing your progeny down the road.

I don't know that I have ever as yet seen a spotted amel. Have they been produced yet?

Nope, no such thing as an albino spotted annulata...... yet.
Susan Hardy produced some babies from albino X spotted but I think she lost them all.
