How do you keep records?

joecop Apr 06, 2012 03:05 PM

I have my cave man approach, which drives my wife nuts. She is a computer wiz and can't stand how I do things. LOL. All snakes in shed go into the end file, the file prior to the end file are snakes up next to feed and after they feed they go to the end of the line again. SIMPLE!!!! ALL of my animals have their own book, with the exception of a hatchling pair I have, and if I give someone a snake the book goes with the animal. I gave my brother in law a pyro last year and he calls with all sorts of questions. When will he start eating again after brumation?, ect. ect. I just say---look in the book. Pics of laundry room record books-

Oh, and if I see a snake is still real hungry I will feed them again and replace the book at the end of the line. Gravid females get pulled all the time!!

I keep mine in an Excel workbook, 1 tab per snake. Photo shows my records for Richochet.

Oh how my wife would love to see that!!! Very nice. Guess I am just old fashion in the way I do things. I would have to write things down on a notepad to remember them so I could put them into the computer anyway, so I just write it down in book. Your way looks MUCH more proffesional, that is for sure!!

I am with you Joe, very primitive. I still use regular index cards for my system. When the card is full it goes in a plastic index card filing box. The front of the card has all the feed and shed records the back has all my notes, breedings, and if female, egg laying and how many(Fertile/Infertile).

Maybe one day I will break down and start putting it on the computer, but transferring all that info would take a year. Might be a good winter project this year.

I do use an Excel worksheet for my purchasing/sales/and lineage or special information. It makes it easy to remember who/what/when and where. I have been trying to set up a folder for pictures of each animal but I just have them grouped by ssp. on the computer.

Here's something I created in Excel in 2005 or so.....I am and Excel nerd....LOL

I added a recent animal and some bogus information in it to show someone how it worked earlier this year....

I don't even keep feeding and shedding records anymore.
I do keep lineage information......

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

John, that is too small for me to see. It looks pretty detailed. My wife would love that too!!

Boy am I glad you said something Joe, I was beginning to think I needed glasses. Seems like you're not the only one that keeps paper records. Murphy's Law, why fix it if it isn't broke.

My recording keeping equipment; clipboards for feeding and sheds, one for the pyros and one for the pituophis, and a calender for events such as lock ups, egg laying, hatching, and such. An old index card box. They all get an index card with data on where they came from, when they were hatched, and weights.

screen shot of some of my computer records. Everybody gets a photo when hatched or purchased, and momentous events such as lock ups and eggs pipping are recorded, with dates.

An awesome site but I am too lazy to enter all the data. It looks like I have not fed my snakes in years! LOL!
Oh, I also write data on the tanks and tubs with a magic marker, like when I last washed the cage, who is in it, that sort of thing. real high tech...

LOL. Love it Bob. Yeah, mine works for me and I am too stubborn to change it. (Plus it drives my wife nuts, which is a plus). I like the way you think. Eventually we all will probably have to give in to technology though. ARGGGGG.

I like that except for the computer, I don't have to turn anything on or plug anything in. I can see at a glance who is due to be fed again and check mark their names so I know how many mice to get from the mouse barn that day. Old clipboard records go into plastic baggies in the order they were recorded, so I can go back years and correlate patterns in feeding, growth, breeding. If all my records were on my hard drive that would be risky in case of hard drive failure (although frequent backups should prevent data loss), and also unwieldy as it would require electricity to access. Sometimes old fashioned is better...

Yeah, I like my assembly line method. If I put food in cages overnight I just lay those books on top of the assembly line and check the cages in the morning. As usual, if they ate they go to the back of the line and if not I slide them into a row that gets fed in another two days or so. I also highlight the times they are opaque and shed so I can adjust feeding accordingly. Normally if they did not eat they have a shed coming up and I can easily see that by looking for the last highlighted marks.
