Anyone who uses an Active UV bulb I have a question.....

spartan117 Oct 04, 2003 09:11 AM

I just got mine yesterday, but when i plugged it in it gives of a bluish light. Is this normal? Plus it doesn't heat my 29gal as well as my 150watt did, is that normal? Do they give off less heat than normal bulbs? Is it broke? Thanks.

but it is very slight. PowerSuns give off a yellow tinge. I think it is the glass the light is coming through. Our old Active UV Heat ones were different.

What watts are you using? Is is a spot or a flood and how far from the basking spot is it and what is the temp?

Depending on the ambient temp of your house and the lenght of distance from your basking area.... you should be able to get the basking temps right. Are you measuring with a probe temp or a temp gun?

We have 7-8 going at any time and with only one do we have to add a additional heat light and that is a 65 gallon in the corner of a room that is the coolest in the house. We use mostly 160 watt floods.

I use a spot bulb, but it is like 20inches from the basking spot. Should I move it closer? It says not to, but I think they put the warnings on just so people don't let the animal overheat with such a big bulb. Thanks

A spot should be putting out good heat, but they are really more designed for higher point area UVB, so you can have them farther away from the dragons, hence less heat on the basking area and you will probably need to add another heat source like a household bulb in another fixture near it.

On the future, switch to the floods, they are minimum 12 inches for powersun and we have found these work best.

Set up with powersun and another light.
