New Rack Finish

Seeves1982 Apr 08, 2012 01:39 AM

A friend of mine told me that he could build me nice racks made out of plywood rather than the typical plastic you see. I've seen plywood racks at shows and have talked to builders of both. The general census is that plywood will do just as well as plastic, but you loose some humidity do to the wood absorbing the moisture where plastic won't. Does anyone have any ideas on a good finish for wooden racks? I'd imagine it would have to be something that would help treat the wood to be moisture resistant also I'd be looking for something that would maybe even make the wood more durable. I was actually thinking something like smooth finish spray in bedliner. Lastly are there any concerns with toxicity after drying? Are there any finishes to stay away from?

Thanks

I built one from the plastic racks from home depot it holds humidity well I had one made of wood and it absorbed the humidity moisture I would not use any other products due to the possibility if being toxic this us just my opinion though the home depot rack cost 50 a rack it took two to build mine plus the heat tape and heat cable and tubs all this under 250

I build racks of plywood, seal with polyurethane, or stain/polyurethane. Just be sure to give a couple of days to cure and air well before puting animales in it.
