How are Brazilians as pets?

dylpro Apr 09, 2012 06:29 PM

I've always thought the Brazilian rainbow boas were beautiful. I have always wanted one and now that I've gotten more into snake keeping (I own 3 snakes as of now) I would love to finally obtain one, since I know they are necessarily beginners snakes. But I think I'm ready.

I've researched them. I plan on getting a front opening terrarium with a glass top to try and hold the humidity in the tank. I also plan on using a fogger to help keep the humidity aswell. I'm going to also make it a very naturalistic set up.

So my few questions are, do these make good pets? I hear they can be somewhat nippy as babies, but how about as they age? They are just such beautiful snakes.

How long do they typically get? I heard they can get up to 6 and 7 feet, but is this common?

That's all for now. Thanks.

Yes, BRBs make great pets, as I am sure anyone in this forum would tell you. They can be a little nippier as babies than other commonly kept species, but with the proper handling will grow out of it. They do require slightly different care than other commonly kept species. You should be able to find a care sheet on most breeders website. I recently posted a care sheet on my website if you are interest, www.rainbowsbydesign.com If you are going to get a BRB I would strongly suggest reading through a care sheet. To answer you last question, 6 ft is about as long as I’ve ever seen a BRB get. I would say adults are typically more in the 5 ft area.

I have read through several care sheets. I really would love one, they are so beautiful. I'm probably not going to be able to get one until August or September. They don't supply them in my city, so I'll have to buy one online, and I want to have it shipped in good weather. I'm really excited. What is a good price to look for? I just want a normal, no special morphs or anything.

I wish all of my snakes were as easy as my BRB. She feeds easily, she's willing to hang out with me, and she's just so pretty! She does get grumpy from time to time but it's never anything serious, and I've handled her regularly since she got settled in as a little baby. It's important with jumpy, nervous babies of any species to give them time to relax while you're holding them - that sometimes means holding still until you start to lose feeling in your fingers, lol! Some are quicker to relax than others, like any animal. Eventually they realize that you aren't going to eat them, and they chill out. As snakes go, they seem to be higher up on the intelligence scale in my experience. As pets go, she's awesome!

Simply put, they are awesome, so colorful and bright. Yes they do typically get 6 foot but still slender bodied. As already suggested, find a care sheet from a breeder, not a reseller as some of those are cut/paste from other species and not always correct. B abies are typically born late summer so easily shipped around the country before weather gets too cold. Find a trusted breeder and you won't go wrong. ASK the questions you have and see what kind of response you get...
