I've experimented over the years and for 3 years now have not dropped temps. at all...doesn't seem to be necessary. I worked with a lady from Ghana that told me she barely ever needed a jacket at night...that kind of put in perspective for me.

Not needed period. I run 90 degrees on my helix year round right though breeding season. Tubs have an 88 degree hot spot. The ambient temp drop is enough for breeding season.

I mantain a hot spot between 88-90 year round. I only drop my room temp at night a few months during breeding season. Other then that I run my room around 82 all day and all night.
Hi,
The question to ask is - what are the temps on the cool side of the cage, away from the heat source during the winter (our coolest season, during which most animals spend a portion of their reproductive cycle)? Females seek cool to grow follicles, hence the water bowl wrapping we are all so familiar with. Sperm is also known to die or deform in unsuitably warm conditions. So, your males might end up shooting blanks if they can't chill out a bit also.
Now, its not about all or nothing here, just subtle differences that will allow them the choices to do what we want them to do. We know that ball pythons don't need much temperature variation to reproduce, but they do need some. So, your nighttime ambient may be cool enough if they can get to the low seventies away from the heat source. If it is, you may not need a fancy thermo with a nightitme drop. Good luck.
Will
