Kankakee-Black bulls or tri-colors

LucasJennings Apr 12, 2012 10:44 AM

I have seen them listed at both. Are the black bulls and tri-colors just morphs of this locale?

And anyone know of someone working on the black ones?

The little dark Bullsnakes from Jasper County (Indiana) are the ones sometimes refered to as 'Black Bulls'. 'Tricolor Bulls' are not designated to a specific locale, other than the Kankakee area.

"Kankakee Bull" can refer to any bullsnake from the Kankakee Sand Prairie, which includes parts of Indiana and Illinois. They are not necessarily Kankakee County locality, unless specifically designated as such.

The tricolor and black bull snakes are different ends of the range of variation found in that area (they can also be found elsewhere). The tricolor phase is common throughout the whole area. The black phase is much less common, and turns up more frequently on the Indiana side.
