lost my female yesterday

bowhunter1963 Apr 19, 2012 08:57 PM

My female brooks was due to shed anyday.Went into the snake room and seen she had shed so I started to get her nesting box ready.Well I got it all set up and went to get her and found her dead.I took her to the vet today to see what happened and make sure it was not something to spread to the rest of my collection. The vet called and said it looked like it happened from an egg bursting inside of her.He said no parisites or anything abnormal with her organs. She had 13 good eggs and 5 that was deformed. Here are some pics when I found her.Sorry so long of a post.

Man, I know how you feel! My female Blue line grayband did almost the exact thing! I am so bumbed out! I try not to even think about it. That was the only female from that line available anywhere. Now I have 2 males and no female. She was going into shed, and just croaked for seemingly no reason. Why is it the ones we care for the most? I was super excited about locating that female, and she looked gravid too. Like REO says, Keep on Rolling!

Yeah Jimmy! It blows really hard! I will try to mate my male to that Granite I got from Brandon, but she is already gravid now. Don't know if she will double clutch? Then I have to wonder if any sperm is retained from the first mating?

Just a thought for you, I read an article or post on double clutchin GBK's somewhere. I think it was Mike Russo that posted it. He said that he double clutched one and she had trouble getting weight back on and she only laid like three or four eggs the next year. I know when I double clutched my knoblochi, she laid 12 first clutch, 8 second clutch and 4 the next year. I also had a tough time putting weight back on her too.....Just a thought to consider...

I know, I remember that conversation. He was telling me that, lol. I just don't know if it would be worth it, to save another year?

I won't do it again, she was just so weak after the second clutch I thought every day was going to be her last. She has really good weight this year and looks like she has a boat load of eggs again.

Thanks Jimmy, I'll wait another year. It's just such a set back already. I wish I new why she died.

I had a AZ Mtn. King do the same thing 2 years ago.....Never found out why but she had 4 eggs in her and died prior to prelay shed. Just some unknowns that we need to find out.

That is a real bummer. I have never thought of that happening to a gravid snake; now I will worry about my girls more.

Congrats! Also very smart of you to hold back some offspring. I will be holding back a ton of animals just for that very reason.....Especially since some of my adults are 15 plus years old already.
