how can you tell if they are gravid or not?

If they are pacing the cage, and/or digging test holes. Take her to get xray. Also you cold try feeling the eggs between her rear legs - usually take experience. And deffinatly if they start retaining water, and having cravings for pickles and Ice cream - ha ha

This pretty much summs it up. You really can't tell except by observation of the species and time.

My redfoot did exactly this. Pacing and digging with the hind legs. The pickles thing..... well she never mentioned that she wanted any. After several weeks of this she finally laid her eggs.
