Looks a -lot- like a big, fat, mite lodged in there. I brought home a baby ball python with mites (didn't find that out till later ), and that's exactly what they looked like.

Probably just dirt. What kind of substrate do you use? If the spot moves, it may be mites... although I wouldn't know since I have had good luck with never getting mites in my collection. If you keep good records, check when it last shed and when its due to shed again...because if it is dirt, it will come off with the next shed.

I'm pretty sure it's mites. Looks like several of them and you've pointed out the largest one. If you're seeing black specs in the water bowl, I'm sure this is what you have.

Put the snake in a white pillow case and let it slither around in it for 30 minutes. After you take it out, "flower" open the bag and inspect for black dots. If they're moving, they're mites. Use a magnifying glass if necessary.

Good luck,

Don

Mites can stay near of my snake eyes for more than 5 days without moving!?!

I checked for black specs in my water bowl but there is nothing... I've buy this snake last week, maybe they still haven't have time to reproduce...

I will do the pillow trick as soon as possible. Tomorrow i was supposed to clean my terrarium by the way.

What should i do to remove this mite from his eye!? is it dangerous for the snake eye!? I was suspecting mite too so this afternoon I checked the chapter about mites in the corn snake manual and Kathy says: "a dab of petroleum jelly over a snake's eye will suffocate mites buried around the occular scale"... I think i'm going to try this.

Last thing, my others snakes have been in contact with this one, should i treat them too!?

thx

yes you have to treat all the snakes and enclosures, this means cleaning everything out and disinfecting it. get new substrtate and all. go to the reptile store and buy some reptile relief it works liek a champ and you can spray it on the snake. i had mites once i used this stuff and havent had them again.

Hey Froggy,
What are friends for.......lol
The parents are doing great. The female just shed yesterday and the male a few days ago and they are looking great.
They will be going into brumation right before Thanksgiving and will be brought back out around the middle of February.
Then we will see how compatable they are!
You will still have pick of the litter.

I dont think it's a mite, ticks are almost rare except with wild caughts. It doesnt look rounded like a blood filled mite.I have seen mites get into eyesockets with sick dehydrated snakes. That just looks to flat like a tick or maybe substrate.Try getting it out with a wet paper towel. If it's a tick and you trust your snakes eyesight with your own handywork try geting it out with tweezers. You could also cover it in corn oil and hope it releases itself...Good Luck....Paul.

ticks are larger than mites...quite a bit larger

Ive seen many small ticks,so small they could hide between scales.20 years ago the first thing you did when you got a snake was pick off all the visible ticks.I sure am grateful for captive born...Paul.

Lunar-reptiles Oct 05, 2003 06:29 PM

The only thing I have ever seen on a snake that looks like that is a tick. We had a shipment of WC ball pythons come in and they were covered in ticks. you need to remove it. If you don't trust yourself to do it, let a vet do it.

The reptile relief stuff doesn't work with ticks. I tried it on those ball pythons........didn't work AT ALL. Didn't have much luck with it on mites either.

And when you have a large mite infestation the eyes will actually go inside the head because there are too many mites wedged between there.

I hope it's neither.I cant wait to find out if it's a mite, tick or substrate.Ive seen mites inside the eyesockets of snakes that were grossly infected with them.20 years ago all we could get here were WC adult ball pythons that were sick as hell and crawling with internal and external parasites. There were no vets that would even look at a snake back then.Well when something of mine died i took it upon myself to be there coroner.Im sure ill be flamed for this but, there were mites packed in behind there eyes.I could never figure out how i was constantly being reinfected with mites even though i was doing everything in my power to wipe them out.I even had pyrhenthin sprayers set on timers in my snakeroom.Sorry for mispells nd incoherant rambling i just spent 5 hours at the tavern watching my cubbies win another game and i have a 7 foot guyana redtail draped over my shoulders trying to explore everything on my desk...Paul
