Tegu wanter

LizardLuva Oct 04, 2003 03:35 PM

I was recently surfing the internet reasearching a new lizard for myslef and i stumbled across a site. I am interested in tegus but My little brother keeps mice and rats so i would feel uncomfortable to feed my new addition small animals, so i was wondering if you think it would be possible to feed it on insects and greens as its basic diet. Another question, I dont no which species to get, size isnt a big problem, because i will be building my own cage, cost of the tegu would be limited but not like it has to be only 20.00 like some lizards, I have a smaller cage from when i raised anoles(rescued) to breed crickets/insects in to feed my new friend, i would like to be able to handle this herp often and i would want to find a tegu that would have a good personality, so do you think a tegu is right for me?If yes, which species would be best, (your opinion). Thanks!
If you could answer all of these questions that would be great, Thanks again!

If you want a "bigger" lizard that's very likely to be nice then I think you're in the right spot. The ones that are better about being handled are Blues, reds, or Argentine B&Ws. You should be able to take your pick for around 100$. The are all pretty big (blues are a little smaller) so I don't think little insects would be much of a food source for an adult unless maybe those hissing cockroach (are they big?). The main thing about whole food items like mice, rats, or chicks is they have bones. If you don't want to feed them whole food items then get bone meal. You could mix it with ground turkey or put it on fruit or whatever. Mine like cooked mussels you could put bone meal on them too.
