Cool picture Kerby. Most of those pairings should be pretty predictable, huh?

That's quite a list, Kerby. Do you have any photos of the Triple het albino, lavender, hypermelanistic?

Here are the parents of the triple hets.

A Blizzard (displaying both albino & hypermelanistic at the same time) breeding a Lavender, thus all the babies are triple hets (albino, lavender, hypermelanistic).

That is awesome! Thanks for those pictures. So, I guess its true any time a het carries both the lavender and albino gene, it will look hypomelanistic?

Yea....they look like hypos that are triple het for lav, amel and hyper......

No, I mean't how did you know that combination of hets is supposed to look like a hypo, but I just realized you were probably going by the pictures Kerby posted.

They sure do look like hypo's. I don't know what makes them not, other than they are not supposed to be.

Kerby... May 04, 2012 07:20 PM

Some of the double hets (usually males) will pop out "hypo" looking but they are just double hets.

Here is a double het for albino & lavender that came out looking different.

OK, good to know. I know someone that bred a Blizzard to a Lavender and all the triple hets looked hypo or like a dark lavender. I guess it can happen sometimes. Here's one of them.

-----

Jlassiter May 04, 2012 07:53 PM

Now why isn't that hypo?
Not being facetious just curious.....

Because I think of the term hypo besides appearance is also a recessive gene.....like the hypos that I do have (proven recessive).

This guy is 100% double het (albino & lavender) and that is all. He does NOT carry a recessive gene of hypo.

It happens all the time when you breed two recessive genes together, thus producing double het babies and some of them appear different than the norm. I do not have an explanation for that.

I do not want to be quick in "mislabeling" those that look different as is too common in the classifieds.

Thanks for the explanation.......I agree it fits the definition of hypo but if not reproducible via a recessive, codom or dominant gene then I guess it's just a different looking normal? But these normals are expressing something different than the norm due to the genes they are carrying......like markers? Visual hets?

Out of the clutch of double hets (albino & lavender) he was the only one that was different.....but yet they were all double hets.

Here is a picture of him with a regular high white (not his clutch mate) just to show how different he was as a hatchling.

That is a really unique looking animal! I guess my earlier comment about predictability is way wrong. Thanks for all the insight. Very interesting!

I like how you do mostly the same traits together, like triple het x triple het where both snakes are triple hets of the same traits. Makes it easy to follow (unlike what goes on with those Florida king breeders, lol).

Kerby... May 04, 2012 06:53 PM

Just after certain results.

In the future.........

Blizzard (albino & hypermelanistic)to a Coral Ghost (hypo & ghost), producing quad hets (albino, hypermelanistic, ghost, hypo).

Blizzard (albino & hypermelanistic) to a Pink Pearl Ghost (ghost & lavender), producing quad hets (albino, hypermelanistic, ghost, lavender).

The hard part is getting a cal king to display two recessive traits at the same time. We have had Blizzards (albino & hypermelanistic) for awhile. And Purple Passions (lavender & hypermelanistic).

Now I have:
Coral Ghost cal kings (hypo & ghost)
Casper Ghost cal kings (albino & ghost)
Pink Pearl Ghost cal kings (lavender & ghost)

I have:
triple het cal kings (albino, lavender, hypermelanistic)
triple het cal kings (hypo, ghost, albino)

And hopefully this year I will have triple hets (albino, ghost, Blue-Eyed Blonde).

I had done a matrix once will all the cal king recessive genes to help me in my pairings. It is a slow process......

I can understand why you think that. The Florida king traits became confusing for those unfamiliar with their traits. There is no kingsnake that does what the Florida king traits do now. So it is hard for people to wrap their mind around.

I will try and make it real simple. Think of it this way...the Peanut butter, T negative amel and Jelly as one snake. One trait. just expressing themselves differently.

they all share alleles with each other. Just not with other traits. So they are not codom. But act like a codom trait with each other.

So if you bred a Peanut butter ghost to a Jelly axanthic. You would get jelly axanthics and PB axanthics that are het for hypo.

Really nice line-up there coach! I may have to break down and get some of those light and dark ghosts this year. Good Luck with all those hets and double and triples, hope the odds go in your favor!

Most of my females are gravid with only one female yet to shed for the first time. Tomorrow I will see who needs lay boxes. I am hoping for some interesting hatchlings in August and September.
