Hi everybody,
I have a new baby beardie. He's almost 5 weeks old and gorgeous. I've read quite a few posts here over the last few months, and learned a lot about keeping beardies - probably more than I've learned from the books I've bought, to be honest! But I do have a couple of queries, and I'm hoping some of the experienced beardie keepers can help me.
The only problem I have with little Dante is that the viv has a light & heat bulb in a mesh cage just inside, and the viv also has a mesh top. He has a plastic plant which he loves to bask on, which is quite close to the mesh cage of the bulb, and he's just figured out that he can jump from the plant to the bulb cage. I've touched the bulb cage and it isn't scorching hot to the touch - am I right in thinking it won't burn him to clamber on it? Am I better off putting the bulb on top of the mesh screen? Is it likely to melt the mesh? (It's a 60 watt reptile bulb.)
He's also just figured out that he can clamber up the bulb cage, and he's been trying to get onto the underside of the mesh ceiling. The mesh is very fine, but he's so small that he can just about get his claws into it. Just now, he clambered onto it; he was quite unsteady and looked like he was about to lose his grip. I was terrified he would fall all the way down and end up killing himself, so I held my hand just under him in case he fell. He promptly grabbed my hand and climbed onto it, then clambered up my arm, looking at me as if to say "Well, what are you so worried about?", then sat quite happily on my arm for ten minutes. (My husband grabbed the camera - hence the pic below.) Am I worrying excessively about this? Should I move everything to make absolutely sure he can't get onto the mesh ceiling? Or am I making a big deal over nothing?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. I've only had him a short time, but I love him to bits and want to get everything right - he's so adorable, and has far more personality than any pet I've ever had!
Thanks,
Sarah
