Kansas Milk-King search continued......

John Fraser May 05, 2012 10:38 AM

Hi All,
I had the great pleasure of playing host to some of the main milkheads of this forum & country & it truely was a great weekend & week to show them the kingsnakes & milksnakes of Southeastern & Northeastern Kansas in their peak activity season habitats. Having had a email from Cole weeks before, he had asked if I would have time to show the gang some places to herp & with a better & more normal Kansas spring & rains than what we had in 2011, I knew this would be great timing to complete "bucket lists" of things these men wanted to find & we did just that. Saturday produced 6 Speckled kingssnakes & 3 Prairie kingsnakes from my home county of Wilson here. After a great lunch with their house host Cody of Fall River, we all headed into a site Mike & I knew of in Elk county & within minutes of getting onto the outcrop, Dell found a syspila, then minutes later, we heard Dave yell out "milk"! & we all went over to see him holding his first ever sypsila like Dell had just done. Awhile later, Dave scores another syspila, before we moved down the road to another outcrop. After leaving Elk county in late afternoon, we had amassed 3 Red Milksnakes & 2 Speckled kingsnakes there, plus plenty of other snakes...

Heres Dells 23"+ syspila he scored in Elk county:

Heres a shot of the rock where Dell scored his snake, left to right, Jeff,Dell(in background), Cole & Mike & a look at the habitat for syspila there:

Heres a Elk county Flat Headed snake, we found several of these small snakes in both counties this day:

The next 3 shots are immediately after Dave scored that first sub-adult bright syspila, with btw, was his first wild-found one, Cole congrats him in first photo, then Jeff does, then his smile says it all....I love smiles like that..

Here s shot of Dave, as he is working his way thru the syspila habitat in Elk county that day. BTW, collecting conditions were IMHO perfect, total cloud cover all day long, 65-66F, with steady N winds 5-15mph, it just couldnt have been any better!:

The NEXT day, at Perry Lake, Jefferson county, KS, within minutes after arrivving there, Cole loses his syspilian virginity, LOL and finds a bright red juvenile red milk, here he is holding it, Dell searching in the background, with a good shot of the habitat the snake was found in, defined in most accounts as "Woodland Edge".:

Heres another shot I took of Dells monster size gravid female syspila that he found at another stop we made at Perry that day, I am thinking she was at least 27-28"+ long. Then a pic of Dell holding her:

And a "In-Situ" shot of a enormous sized Red-Sided Garter snake, 36"+, that Dell turned from under a rock later that day at Perry Lake, Dell said it was the biggest garter snake he had ever seen:

Dave had a flight to catch at KS City this day, and we headed for home, stopping in Topeka & feasted at a KS Fast Food Burger chain called "Spangles", which is a favorite gut-loader for most fast food connosoirs where availiable in selected KS cities. I will post more photos soon, including a Youtube video or two that I made that weekend. later, John F.

I forgot to mention that on our way up to Perry Lake, located just off the West side of US-75 highway, North of Lyndon, KS, is a place we stopped at to get some supplies & take a restroom break, called the "Sports Mart", see the photo below(Note pics taken on our way home). We immediately noticed plenty of signs posted before we entered this store & our experiance there, well... it just plain was negative & sucked, to put it mildly. The man behind the counter looked at all of us when we walked in like "what the Hell are you doing in here" & everyone sensed his behavior & demeanor immediately. Dell I think handed him 50 cents to use the restroom, Cole bought a pair of leather gloves, assuming that would grant another restroom pass for anyone, that was not the case! Dave asked about using the restroom, the clerk wanted 50 cents again & Cole said something about he had just spent over $5.00 on the gloves & that since he didnt need to use the restroom, to let Dave use the restroom from his glove purchase. The clerk said "No", because Cole had bought the gloves, not Dave, so Dave did not use the restroom there as I recall & walked out, as we all did. I told everyone how un-american & rude I thought that man was running that place & that I would never go there again (except to get these pics, lol) & that I was embarrassed to know people like that in KS even exist, LOL! Everyone assurred me that A@@ho##s abound nation-wide & its unfortunate when we encounter them, which is so true... Here pics of the place & its sign stating about restroom fees, LOL! :

John thanks for the laugh. I had kind of forgotten about that part of the trip because clearly everything else outshined that moment.

If that guy isn't careful, he'll end up with an unwanted rest room right behind his store!! ha ha

Don't worry, we wont remember East Kansas by that experience!

state motto...

"NO PUBLIC RESTROOM"

....I would pay $1 .....the places here want old people to come and shop for antiques and actually all stores...and the majority have the no restroom sign at the door and counter and the door to the restrooms the employees obviously have to have on site...

.....funny....

....my friends...would have all lined up outside and actually wetted the side of the building....

actually....it's been done ......!

"my friends...would have all lined up outside and actually wetted the side of the building"

Absolutely!,....and just around the corner to the front door would be a great spot, so when he opens every morning, he gets reminded of his "pi$$-poor" (no pun intended) public relations attitude while it also offends potential customers of his as they approach the store's front door....

Very cool post of your adventures... makes me hope I can take such a trip sometime even if Dell, should we meet, is threatening me with a noogie until I cry uncle.

Gerry

DMong May 06, 2012 04:23 PM

Just don't let Dell take you fishing in the boat with the old-timer that wears very loose shorts with no underwear..LOL!!!..

A "noogie" would be a walk in the park in comparison...

I strongly suspect that I am the "old timer" if age comparisons are to made between Dell and myself.

I've never noticed loose shorts or the lack of underwear in any photos involving Dell... nothing wrong with you noticing though... just saying you know.

Gerry

DMong May 06, 2012 08:16 PM

No, I don't think you were the "old-timer" in the photo I saw a few years ago. I sure as heck hope not anyway..LOL!

I was really only making a funny and sarcastic inside joke comment for Dell's benefit when he read the post. He will DEFINITELY remember what I am talking about..HAHA!!

After getting the pleasure of meeting & getting to know Dell, I can beleive he would be capable of easily administering a "noogie" to any "friend" he feels would need it, LOL!

DMong May 07, 2012 11:19 AM

Yeah, John,.....Dell is a good guy with a great sense of humor to boot!...

I know all you guys had an absolute BLAST together!!
