Red Tails age they start to calm down?

Skyfire_1 May 05, 2012 04:58 PM

Hi, after a few years with Ball Pythons, and a few Gopher Snakes I was looking at a "12" Kahl Albino, at a Reptile Shop (not a Pet Shop so I guess they would know what they are talking about) and when the man picked one up to hand it to me he said they are still young and have not gotten to their "Nippy" stage yet. In the past I recall seeing a few yearlings that also seemed quite "Nippy", but yet I know the BCI's seem like they are really more of a docile snake as adults.

So my question is, is their a "Nippy" stage that Boa's go through, and then tend to calm down in time? If so does it last long?

Thanks...

Quick answer: Not every boa goes through a "nippy stage"

I've seen babies come out raising hell with mouths open, ready to kill you and I've seen others that are "sweet as can be" before their first meal.

Some will calm down with time/work and others will be a**holes forever. It's the nature of the beast with all snakes. None are never truly "tame"

Good Luck!

I have raised many BCI and BCC boas and never had one that went into a "nippy" stage from a calm baby as the snake grew. I have had boas that were nippy or aggressive as a baby and grew into calm adults but a few didn't. What I have seen is that a calm baby, with proper care and consistent handling, will grow into an even calmer adult. Bill
