Pothos Plants and Calcium

SaveFerris Oct 04, 2003 04:29 PM

I read somewhere that if your cham eats the pothos plants, it hurts somehow with the calcium intake. That or some kind of crystals in the sap of the pothos plant???

Hi-

Well some plants are know to be toxic to some animals and not for others. The toxic compound you are talking in the pothos plant is calcium oxalate crystals. This is know to cause problems in cats and dogs like vomiting, burning, and irritations. In reptiles pothos are not a problem. Now if consumed in large numbers the calcium oxalate crystals may block calcium intake, but these plants have been used for years with reptiles. To sum things up, I would not worry about the pothos poisoning your chameleon. Hope this helps!
