Off Topic Egg Recovery Success!

pyromaniac May 05, 2012 07:39 PM

My fencies have been breeding well, but not laying the eggs in the right spot in the main tubs. I'd find the eggs on the soil surface all rubbery (lost two clutches) so I decided to put the gravid mamas in a little maternity tub all their own with no choices other than deep moist vermiculite, and no males just in case the males were somehow bothering them. Added a few crickets and food and water (mamas will drink the water,as well) for those, and kept the tub moderately warm at night. During the day it is put out in the sun for their daily sunbath.

The little maternity tub. There is always someone who likes to hang out! LOL!

The top piece of bark.

The mamas on the bottom piece of bark. They can go under this bark to lay their eggs. I set this up yesterday and this morning recovered 8 perfect plump white eggs buried in the vermiculite! The mama who laid the clutch was returned to her main tub. Five more to go!

Bob, you are a smart and lucky man to have those at your disposal. I have been thinking about doing it again, though the ones I had I caught gravid. Your way rocks!!

This is the second mama just after laying her clutch over night. She had excavated a nice deep hole and is currently in the process of burying the clutch and resting after her labors.

Having these lizards on hand makes life so much easier with some of my special needs baby pyros. Most of my babies eat pinks just fine, but I do have a couple who even have to have the lizard put in their mouth by hand for them to know how to eat! Just leaving the lizard in with the baby doesnt seem to be enough. I am not willing to wait for an eating response that may take months on its own, and meanwhile have the baby get weak and thin.

are the baby scelops big enough for pinheads or do you have to stick with smaller insects?

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

Pinhead crickets are perfect. I raise gryllus assimilis, more commmonly known as Jamaican field crickets, which hatch out a bit bigger than acheta domestica, and those work great. The first year I did fence lizards I didnt have any crickets breeding so had to go out and find termites and ants. What a hassle! LOL! Someone suggested I raise my own crickets; way easier!

That's neat. I've set up my kingsnakes in tubs similar to that the last two years and it works very well. They seem to drop at 5 to 9 days post shed rather than the 7 to 13 days post shed that was the norm when I was using regular nest boxes.

Yeah, I think making things as simple as possible for them works best, as long as it is the suitable nesting material.

Now that is what I call being on top of your animals. You knew something was wrong and you used your common sense to figure it out. Great Job, Bob! Congrats on those little guys when they hatch...

Thanks!
I am always very happy when I can figure out a problem and fix it. It makes having this big human being brain fun to own! LOL!
