OT this week... snake ID wanted

gerryg May 06, 2012 05:05 PM

I remembered this picture of a snake I found here in Maine 25 odd years... I have never been able to decide if it was a garter snake or a redbelly. It's an odd color for either snake here in Maine but the rusty colored marking at the neck along with the lighter blotches at the supralabials keeps me thinking redbelly. It's size fell within a range for a garter with an adult pattern but also within redbelly range.

Since for the most part I have a difficult time recalling things clearly from last week I can't provide more details than that... so any opinions/ideas?

Not the best photo I'll admit but before I could take others or examine it more closely it managed to make a quick escape into a nearby rock pile.

Gerry,..

Yes, that's a Northern Red belly (Storeria o. occipitomaculata). they can be highly variable as with many other types of snakes.

.....cool find!

Thanks Doug... I'll move from 99.8 % sure it's a redbelly to 99.99% sure with your input.

Nice photo btw...looks just like the snake in my pic!

make it 100% sure it's a redbelly....

!!!!

....only ever found one and itwas hurt/cut....left it be either way....DeKay's...now they will eat from your hand in no time...cool snakes.....(but in community cage...the males breed till females are infected, so....use just females...and or take males out if you ever have a bunch of DeKay's by chance.....just in case....

I agree, don't be afraid to throw in the .01%. There is absolutely no chance it is anything else.

Really cool little snakes.

Did I mention these guys were small?

I agree. Redbelly. I knew Mr. ID would get this one before I could make an attempt. Doug knows his critters!! I have only found a few in MD and they were in Southern MD. I have never found any outside of that area. Cool snakes for sure.
