giving live feeding a new meaning.

i fed my adult albino shes about 2200 grams a smaller than usual rat and she didnt fully kill the rat and she ate it live. i have to admit felt bad for that rat as it was kicking as it was being swallowed live i was actually concerned for my snake. i know its not a good thing that she ate it live but is there any reason for concern?

The main worry would be tearing of the esophagus. I had this occur with an Amazon Tree boa around 10 years ago. The snake started to swallow the rodent live (barely). I was horrified to see the rodents claw rip through the esophagus. The snake did not survive this, succumbing to infection despite surgery and medication.

I hope yours will be fine.

Wow that's horrible!! Looking at her she looks
Fine I would imagine if this had happened to
Mine she would be in some sort of obvious discomfort?
I hope she's fine! Was it obvious that something happened
To your snake when this occured? Thanks for sharing that!!

Hi,
Mine was evident immediately. The skin did not return to its pre-stretched condition. Instead, it appeared stretched and thin, and the slice was immediately noticeable.

You should be fine.

I would maybe think about offering her frozen or maybe pre kill the rat before you offer. Just looking at the safety of your animal.

I have had this happen once.

Back several years ago when I was still feeding live (have gotten him to switch to f/t) my bp Nicky must have been verry hungery as he only constricted that weeks meal till it passed out. He started swallowing it and it came to with its back legs still sticking out of his mouth. I could see it kick its legs and move through his skin but it did not seem to bother Nicky in the least. He just kept swallowing and had no problems.

I recomend always trying to switch snakes to pree killed or f/t to avoid any risk of injury.
