Gravid Female and Pre-Lay Shed Questions

H_nasicus May 08, 2012 05:20 PM

So I've been thinking my hoggie female is gravid, but I'm not sure. She's gained about 100g in weight, and is spending most of her time on the heating pad.

I only witnessed her locking up with a male once, so I'm not sure if she's fertile or not.

Also wondering, between copulation and laying, is there only one shed (the pre-lay shed) or can a female hoggie shed multiple times? My big girl that I believe may be gravid just shed and I'm wondering if I should be expecting eggs in a week, or if I might have to wait for another shed cycle.

This is my first year breeding hogs. So i am no expert but my female just laid her eggs 17 days after her pre lay egg shed. I never saw my hogs hook up but my eggs look good.

was the pre-lay shed the only shed she had between breeding and egg-laying?

Yes it was the only one.

I unfortunately dont have an answer for you but Id say make a nesting box fill it with wet vermiculite or moss and play the waiting game...good luck...There are several people on here who are experts on the matter but getting any of them to reply to questions like this is beneath them....here to happy hogs

Thanks! I went ahead and set up the nest box over a week ago. Just in case. I'm still paranoid that, if she is gravid, she won't lay in it. It would be just my luck for her to dump her eggs on the heating pad.

You may be getting eggs within a week or so. Can you feel any eggs when you gently rub your fingers down her belly?............... That didn't sound right for some reason.

I've only ever done that once on a snake (a cottonmouth) so I'm not sure if I'd be good enough to feel the eggs. I'm also worried that I would press too hard trying and damage something.

were laid yesterday.

One week after the prelay shed.

Many of, even the better looking eggs, don't feel or look good...but I can see blood vessels. I'm hoping Hog eggs just feel different from other colubrids that I'm used to producing.

I'm hoping for Condas Het Amel!

Here's the sire:

Good luck with your clutch!

Nice! From what I can see in the pic, I'd say at least 4-5 look good, so hopefully they are just different feeling from other colubrids.

Thanks for the well wishes. I will definitely keep my fingers crossed for you as well.

Only hoping for Condas Het. Amel? You should be hoping for Albino Condas!
