Feeding problem

garage May 09, 2012 05:44 AM

I have a 1100 gram female fire that will constrict a rat, swallow it up past the neck, then spit it out. She has always been a consistent feeder, but has done this the past 4 attempts. I've tried smaller prey, but no change. I also checked the inside of her mouth, clean as a whistle. Thanks for any input!

I would try a weaned rat and if she spits that out move down to a crawler.

First two things that came to mind when reading your post were prey size and sickness, but you covered both of those. Has there been any change in her environment or anything else that might cause her stress? I agree with Alan. Try smaller prey items and let us know how it goes.

The first time she did this, I went to a smaller sized prey. She is housed in an ARS 7030. Her environment has been very stable and stress-free. I guess I'll try a crawler rat and see if that works. Thanks for the input!

Sometimes they dislike substrate in their mouth. Aspen or cypress stuck to the fur of the prey may also be a issue. I hope that helps.
