how about chicks? and waxies?

bukinara Oct 04, 2003 05:54 PM

does anyone feed their tegus chicks? there's a reptile show up here in tallahassee this weekend, and there's a vendor selling lots of frozen food items. i was wondering whether or not i should just stick to mice and rats, or buy some chicks, too. i was also considering buying a few hundred waxworms for my tegus (since none of the local stores ever seem to have them). i used to feed them to my breeder geckos and baby animals. do you recommend them for tegus? do yours like them? anywho... the bottom line... i'm might buy some frozen chicks and live waxworms, is there any reason i shouldn't? thanks for the input.

I have fed appropriate sized chicks to Felix on several occasions. He seemed to enjoy them and I don't see any reason why they can't be included in the diet. Just one more thing to give them a little variety. My Tegus are all so large now, I doubt they'd give a waxworm a second glance. The geckos and Water Dragons sure love them tho!

that's what i figured... i just wanted to make sure that there weren't any negative things i didn't know about... as for the waxies, i doubt my tegus will ignore them... they aren't that big yet, even though their appetites are huge!

thanks!

anyone else wanna chime in?

I don't know what else you have...bullsnakes, and other snakes will eat the chicks. The only objection I have heard about waxworms is their high fat content. I don't think they will be a problem with tegus.

well, then i think i'll do that. i'll get some frozen mice and rats of assorted sizes (i'm feeding two ball pythons, as well), frozen chicks, and a batch of waxworms. i guess all i'm getting this show is feeders (sigh... i always want a critter, but i'm not dumb enough to buy another one right now). i'll also keep an eye out for cage furniture and whatnot. there were some beautiful baby red tegus at the show. also columbians and argentine b&ws, but no baby blue tegus. there was only one blue tegu at the show, but it was someone's special little boy. alright...

well, by the time i got back to the show today, the vendor ran out of chicks. but i bought 100 crawlers anyway. i also bought 250 waxworms, but honestly... the boys didn't put the hurtin' on those like i expected. they ate a good deal, but i figured they'd go crazy. in fact, i think they seemed a little put off by the fact that their food was still wriggling when they chomped down on it. i guess the next few feedings will be heavy on waxworms until i get rid of the suckers.
