First boa birth!

snakekate May 13, 2012 02:38 AM

Female boa has been acting weird lately, and went to check on her today she looked real thin. In her hide were 9 healthy babiesAny advice would be greatly appreciated, while I have experience with many boas, this is my first batch of babies. How long should I wait to feed them? They are pretty fat in there midsections, leftover yolk I imagine. Also, the mom is 6 years old but only about five feet long, 8 pounds or so. Is this a genetic trait that could be passed on?

Congrats on the healthy litter!

You should put them all together in a rubbermaid on damp paper towels. Together they'll stimulate each other and be active, while the humidity keeps and yolks from drying out.

You can probably offer them food in 10-14 days and start separating them out into their own containers.

Congrats again and best of luck with them!

Btw - had the female been with a male lately or within the last 2-3 years? Retained sperm is not unheard of, but parthenogenesis could also be possible (in which case they'd all be genetic copies of the dam).
