some snakes in the field,

FR May 13, 2012 10:11 AM

Was out in the field a bit, to bad the king was dor.

This arizona coral was not touched and photographed, which is not so easy.

The above is a highly gravid female vinesnake, I almost brought it home. I would love to see babies hatch. But I did not touch her.

I thought the king was really clean. Best wishes

That's crazy, the coral just posed for you. Was it earlier in the day? The vine is cool but the senticolis Is my favorite, Santa Ritas?

Excellent finds, and great in-situ shots, FR.

Shame about that king, it was indeed very clean...love the thin bands.

That Coral is stunning! Same with the Oxy. Hell, all of the snakes were great!

DMong May 13, 2012 12:01 PM

Cool stuff Frank!......it certainly is too bad that the "yumensis" phenotype king was a DOR. The coral and Vine "in-situ" photos are great!

Thanks guys, I am going back tomorrow and see if that vine has moved. If you notice in the night pic, she is hanging her eggs.

I normally do everything to not touch snakes particularly is they are in the field. Of course I move them off roads if they are endanger.

If you do not interfere with them, sometimes it offers to the oppertunity to view them over long periods. I have now watched a pair of gilas, for 33 continious years.

This year, we used time lapse cameras to some success. But I have have a lot to learn with those. Cheers

VERY cool Frank. The vine and the coral are my favorites. AZ coral snakes are just amazing to me. I am sure that critter was small and jittery as all get out!!!

FR May 13, 2012 01:12 PM

Hello, actually that was the last shot of the series, that coral was one of the few that I got pics of without it moving or touching it. As most just never stop moving.

After seeing it, it just crawled slowly and head bobbed like it should. But after a while it got tired of having its picture taken. and warmed us with that tail lifting.

That was not a large one, maybe 15 inches. We see them fairly often, but not commonly, they are fairly widespread in habitat type.

The largest I have seen was 7 miles from that one and was 28 inches TL. 18 to 22 inches are normal adults. Cheers

joecop May 13, 2012 03:12 PM

Thanks Frank. They are one of my favorite snakes looks wise. I used to have an eastern coral as a teen. (I know, stupid kid!) LOL. They seem to always have that quick jerky temperment. I have heard scarlet kings don't handle well and wonder if this is part of their coral mimic.(eastern corals) Anyway, very cool. I actually like the way AZ corals look more than easterns but have never seen one in the wild. Thanks for the pics..

Ocelots are in So. Az. But I have not seen one myself here. Seen them in Mexico.

I have seen one Jaquar, a handful of Mt. Lions, and lots of bobcats, with one Jaguarundi.

As you can imagine, cats are wary and not often seen even when they are relatively common. Last year we had a Mt. Lion hit about two miles from my house. And its not really a cat, but we had a ringtailed cat move in our house once. Cheers

GerardS May 13, 2012 03:32 PM

That's awesome! I have seen 3 FL panthers in the Everglades. I never looked for them, just all by chance. My friends see them all the time sitting in their tree stands. The Jaguar would be a highlight of my life.

They contracted a convicted poacher/lion hunter to snare Mt. Lions and Bears(reportedly to study them, which is bullshat) and he snared it, and it tore itself completely up, so they put a radio collar on it, then put it down later.

There was lots of crap over it, some game and fish folks left the office. And the feds were hot and heavy, then all of a sudden its all swept under the rug. Cheers

FR May 13, 2012 07:58 PM

It was not an accident, they placed female jaguar dung around the snare to attact the male.

GerardS May 13, 2012 09:20 PM

I would like to run into those guys out in the field. Thats the most depressing thing I have heard this year. I'm sure there are more, like you said. You just haven't seen them yet, they are pretty hard to see in more common areas. That's crazy you got to see it in the US.

Kerby, Google is nothing more then heresay. And its full of mis-information.

The real reason that cat and others were being killed has not been published.

For instance, what was the reason that trapper was down there in the first place?

Kerby... May 14, 2012 12:36 AM

Just google it and read all about. It is pretty up front.

FR May 14, 2012 11:00 AM

Google Whistling for Macho B. That is the most accurate from what I have read. and its dead on.

The whole ordeal centered around the scat. And that took the focus off the lion/bear trapper.

You snare large animals to TAKE them, not release and study them. To Snare them kills them both physically and behaviorally.

Its a method to "take", not a method to "study". You cannot snare a large cat and expect it to carry on as normal after release.

This is where theres a total coverup. I do not have a lot of respect for what biologists do with animals, but I have to believe they are smarter then that.

A friend of mine that IS a biologist, told me at the in occurred, and we were working IN THAT AREA. Game and fish had a "deal" with the ranchers to take some lions and bears, out of the area. So they hired a trapper, which they did.

Of all that surfaced and all that was reported, that is by far the best and more logical reason this jaguar was killed. Cheers

FR May 14, 2012 11:11 AM

Also game and fish is suppose to manage Arizona wildlife for the use of the people of arizona. THat does not always mean providing for, it can also mean, controlling numbers.

The problem here is, the ranchers are leasing grazing land in public STATE forests, and NATIONAL forests, which are being protected as natural, not being protected as cow pastures. And if you have been in these state and national forests, they are taking the look of cow pastures. Which is clearly not the intent of creating public lands. Cheers

Aaron May 20, 2012 09:18 PM

I haven't read the article you linked to yet. I'll read it later. So you're suggesting that the jaguar was a problem for the rancher, killing cows, so they snared it to "study" it but not really to study it, they just wanted it gone?

What a shame.

Most of the time I was deer hunting and did not have a camera....
I grew up on 20 acres in Aransas County and saw ocelots, jaguarundies and one jaguar there......

I'd love to go find some again and snap some shots......

I've seen one mountain lion out here in CA and I see bobcats pretty frequently. I've got pics of a mamma bobcat with some cubs too. I was walking on a road closed to vehicles in a park and the mamma was down in a grassy area by a creek watching her cubs play/hunt in some tall weeds. As I walked down the road and got closer she called to them with an unusual growl and they came to her and they all went running away up a hillside and into a forested area.

The habitat where these vinesnakes occur is about 2/3 burnt to a crisp. And when I say burnt, its looking bit moonscapish.
