Fruit Fly Medium???

TylerStewart Oct 04, 2003 07:30 PM

I saw somewhere a homemade F fly recipe involving powdered sugar, potato flakes, yeast, mixed with a water vinegar 50/50. I tried it with and without vinegar in 2 jars and have been keeping an eye on it and so far they're doing about the same, but I'm getting alot more flies this week and I need to know which of those 2 is gonna work better. What does the vinegar do? Should I keep using it with the water? I need to make about 20 jars of it this week so I wanna make sure I do it right. Would a few drops of food coloring hurt anything? These are for the Hydei flies. Thanks!

I tried the homemade recipe thing, and the cultures were both smelly, and got moldly within a week. I tried several recipes before ordering a commercial fruit fly medium. I honestly think its not worth the effort to do it yourself. I go to www.livefoodcultures.com to get my fruit fly medium. Its good stuff, and the people there are very helpful.
