New little one

Barker May 18, 2012 10:28 AM

So, long story short. Bred 4 normal girls to a pastel male one laid. Got 2 good eggs out of 3 eggs and 4 slugs. One went bad shortly after laid. I kicked my boyfriend out and his revenge was to nuke my one good egg. I think I found it shortly after he did though the temps were over 100 degrees. I kept the egg hoping it would be ok. Day 60 I checked and found this:

About 3 days later I have this:

Haven't sexed it yet but will soon. First baby ever and a pastel to boot. I think the odds gods felt sorry for me.

That looks like, not a Pastel Jungle, but a Classic Jungle!

Looks like his pattern may have been affected by the "nuking."
Also...dick move on that a$$hat's part.

Congrats on the baby surviving.

Congrats! He/She is a looker!

I agree and disagree with some of the above posts. Little one is definitely a pastel with that jungle cool pattern.
Also, do you mind telling us approximately how far into incubation, that the temp spike happened? 'Cause I think pattern abnormalities being caused by incubation temps is pure speculation. I really dont think? anyone has proved that theory, and people have tried to come up with reasons of why classic jungles didnt seem to follow a typical pattern of inheritance. If the spike happened early, before pattern would have shown up; may be the theory could be true. But if the spike happened later, pattern would have already been set in.

Btw, good job on giving the jerk the boot!

Barker May 18, 2012 11:58 PM

The temperature spike was around day 40ish and was less than 5 hours at the high temp.

I honestly don't know when the pattern actually sets in though. I am keeping an eye on it for any neurological issues. So far I haven't seen any problems. It responds to movement well. I haven't flipped it over yet to see how well it rights itself. I will try that tomorrow. Any other suggestions would be great on things I should keep an eye out for as possible issues do to the extreme temps. I think I caught it before anything happened but can't be too cautious.

Thanks all!

Congrats on your baby!

I see green in those eyes so yeah pastel not just a jungle - that awesome pattern is probably stress related - might just be odd shots combined with the weird pattern but the head looks a little wonky (just me IDK?)

Good luck with him

Looks to me like it has the narrow head deal going on. I have seen plenty of babies born that way. Not a big percentage, but still quite a few over the years.

The head shape typically comes around and at a year old, you can't tell the difference. Let's hope that is the case here.

Sorry about your d-bag troubles Barker. Please don't "make-up" with such a person, it isn't worth it.

Is it just me or does it look like his head/neck is all jacked up? Looks like he lost his neck in the pics. Maybe it's just an illusion, but it looks like that incubation may have done something there? Or am I just seeing things.

caseywagner May 20, 2012 08:29 PM

the neck looks the same thickness as the back of the head..
Congrats on the baby....hope it does well for ya....

the neck does look a little thick. IMO 100 degrees for a day no worries. may have stress the egg alittle but obviusly not to death. The white head and jet black looks like pastel fader to me. Very nice project!
