Homozygous Spiders?

Adam105 May 22, 2012 09:25 AM

How come you do not see homozygous spiders for sale? Do they just not survive? Same for pinstripes, etc.? Interested to hear from people that have bred spider x spider, not people just speculating please!

From what I've read spider x spider and pin x pin are both fatal. But I did come across one article on the web where I read of one successful spider x spider breeding. It was when I first started getting interested in breeding and I knew zero about genetics at the time so the article was way over my head. I'd love to find the article again though.

BHB proved a homozygous pinstripe, so it's not lethal, it's just dominant.

The only two people I remember hearing of breeding spider X spider are NERD and TSK. Genetically there was no reason to expect that all the babies would die, it's only the eggs that hit the 25% chance of being homozygous spider that are in question. TSK reported hatching live spiders and last I heard they were close to starting to breed the potential homozygous spiders. Problem is if spider is homozygous lethal then non potential homozygous spiders will ever prove and you will always wonder if you just had bad luck or the few eggs that didn't hatch had the homozygous spiders.

But so few people have done spider X spider you will probably have to go directly to them to inquire about results.
