Paired up

RossPadilla May 23, 2012 08:33 PM

I just paired up my snakes last week and they all bred. Am I the last one? Seems like all you guys are getting eggs already and some are even hatching them. For those who don't keep their snakes together year round, when do you pair your snakes up?

Congrats Ross!!! Well, next year I am with you. I am going to keep them down longer and breed later in the year. Makes more sense to me. Most of my snakes are mother @#$^%#@@ers as hatchlings and having them hatch closer to brumation, as in nature, would be much better. I am finding wild animals with folicles right now so your timing is more natural for my area anyway. My hondos were hooked up tonight, but the rest of my stuff is laying or laid already this year. (with the exception of a w/c female with developing folicles). Good luck this year Ross.

I brumate from November - March. My snakes hatch in late August and into September.

That is pretty close to how I do it. I brumate Late Nov/early Dec-April. I feed through April and pair them up in mid May. That's what I've observed in the wild too. My eggs usually hatch in early to mid Sept. That's the same time hatchlings are all over the roads down here in Southern CA.

Thanks a lot, Joe! That is cool you will have your eggs hatching early and late. Mine will all come at one time. lol Yeah, I think you are better off breeding later for the hatchlings you have no choice but to brumate sometimes. Too bad not all are easy, but some species are so awesome, its worth the extra work. Good luck to you too, man.

I had to bring my snakes out of hibernation a bit earlier than I had originally planned to because mother nature in Pittsburgh can never act normal.... It was literally in the 70s for 3 days in February, making my attic warm, and I figured it would stay that way so I brought them all out (snowed a couple days later). Fed them a week later and every snake ate, I stuffed them with as much as they would take every couple days until they went into shed.

After shedding the 2 males I was gonna use for breeding (1 mexican milk and 1 cal king) went off feed. All 3 females that bred first (2 cal kings and 1 milk) didn't hibernate here, and all shed before they were shipped to me. As soon as the males shed they bred with these females first. My first cal king breeding of the year was March 29th and the mexican milks on April 2nd. And those 2 are the only ones I have eggs from so far.

My last female cal to breed had her first shed out of hibernation on April 16th, and she bred on the 16th, 17th and 22nd. She had her pre egg laying shed 3 days ago and is pretty thick.

I've been keeping a good bit of records this year, I hope I can use it to my advantage one day lol.

Hey Ross. Glad your snakes are doing well. Here in N. Fla. it started warming up consistently in Feb.,so brought my snakes up. My first Cal king pair mated Feb.17 and laid eggs Mar.28. So they should be hatching pretty soon! My kings bred quickly followed by my corns and my Hondurans just laid eggs real recently.

Hope all goes well with yours. Looking forward to pictures!

Thanks, Dennis! Wow, you got an early start. The temps here this spring have been up and down a lot. I normally don't have the heat on this time of year, but not this year. Yeah, I will post pictures when things are done here. Good luck this year.

LMAO!!!!! That's to funny. Hatching pics are the best for sure! I will certainly be busy come the second week of July as they start to hatch. This year is winding up like last with a clutch or two laid every other day or so since May 12. Just about halfway through. All my Mtn Kings are done except one just bred yesterday, now comes the SA milks to start laying...

RossPadilla May 26, 2012 10:31 PM

Wow, you will be busy. I normally only have 2 or 3 clutches a year. This year maybe 5.

Hey Ross, all my snakes were cooled pretty much the same, yet some started breeding early, and some are taking their time. The few super early clutches I got seemed to be mostly duds. Some od those females are going for round 2, we'll see if they have better fertility this time?

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

Yeah, I am one with a different male, the other with the same male. Should be interesting to see what happens.
