Need Ideas on a good snake

sssssnakes May 24, 2012 01:08 PM

I already have 3 corns, and a Brizillian Rainbow. I have a 40L breeder and another tank that is 3' x 12".

I am looking for a nice breed of snake, that is pleasing to the eye, somewhat calm (definately not a ball python) and a good temperment that will fit in my currently empty enclosures (listed above).

I take my animals around to local schools for demonstration purposes - so nothing that would be (as a general rule) skidish around a lot of children (although for the most part, the kids are quiet).

I am thinking of a pueblan milk snake - but if anyone has a different suggestion, I am open to suggestions.

Also, snake cannot be more than $100

Get any Asian turtle/tortoise if your talking to school kids. Their being eaten of the face of the Earth by the Chinese and are ALL taken illegally by the TONS daily. (I worked on a confiscated shippment that weighed....4.5 TONS. Check with the TSA (Turtle Servival Aliance) and they will send you lots of information to pass out. Look them up,their doing a great job and people that get involved get a shot at traveling over seas to help. It should inspire them. Vic Morgan pic...this tortoise was saved in that shippment and now reproduces in captivity for assurence colony's

That is a great cause - but being in Wisconsin, it would be difficult for me to properly house.

Why not get a Western Hognose? The females will get a lot bigger and they make unique pets.

Western Hognose would be like the bull snake I had - not a good ideas since I am taking them around to show to school children. If something happened to startle it - it would go into huff/hiss mode and probably frighten the children (not the target I am looking to hit).

Thanks for the suggestion though - since posting I have aquired a Hog Isla boa - 6 footer and very calm.

As a primarily exotics keeper, I woud only keep a hoggie for education. I would do in caged and if it hogs out, it opens a great discussion on natural defense mechanisms!

Are you using the term hoggie for the hog nose, or hog island?

Hog Islands are like red tail boas

I would say get a Thayeri king snake. They have are awesome. Calm, bright color and phase come in a wide range of colors and patterns. Plus they stay under 4 feet. Average just over 3 feet.
