Zunchara Laying Her Clutch!

pyromaniac May 24, 2012 06:34 PM

She has laid 7 so far. As she lays them I retrieve them and put them in the incubator. The eggs try to stick to the bottom of the tub, so from here on out I will just give my girls the moss filled Glad container instead. I got five then two and could see she is going to lay more. Normally I would just leave her to finish the whole clutch, but the eggs sticking to the tub was an unforeseen problem. Fortunately no damage, but way hard to detach them once they stick. I put a bit of water where she is depositing them to prevent more sticking.

Another one makes eight. I positioned some moss under her vent to catch the eggs should there be any more.

They look great. Have fun incubating! How long did they take last year to hatch? Dave.

!! total. The last one looks sort of runty but I will leave it in unless it begins to look bad.

Last year they took 70 days to first pip and hatched over a period of 6 days. I incubated at between 76 and 80 F, leaning towards the cool end of the spectrum. The babies emerged with big yolk sacs.

Congrats Bob. Get those lizards ready!!! Weird about the eggs sticking to the plastic. I have not had that problem yet and I hope I don't!!

I think what may have helped (?) the eggs stick is she laid them over the UTH which was partially in the laying area. After I put a pad of moss under her bottom she laid the rest with no sticking. But I do think I prefer the old Glad tub moss lay boxes after all. My other gravid pyro is accepting her Glad box just fine, as are my bull snake and gopher snake.

Thanks! I am especialy looking forward to this cluth hatching, as this is my favorite pyro.

Post lay first meal day after laying. When I feed her I put a bit of water in the container and they always take a big drink first.

As you can see from the incubator picture, I have room for one more pyro clutch, and two pituophis clutches, which is it for this year. Fortunately they don't all hatch on the same week!

Cool, that would be a real shocker for that little pyro to see such a big pit. I wonder what he would be thinking if one did...."Mama????" lol

Well, since my baby bulls wanted to eat within an hour of hatching, I think the little pyro would be thinking "What hell have I been born into!"
