Choosing holdbacks? and another ?

JHM1987 May 25, 2012 12:03 PM

How do you choose your holdbacks? What do you look for and shy away from? For example, in Ball pythons, many people wanting higher quality yellow pastels tend to avoid orange hatchlings as the orange turns brown with age. Is there a way to tell if your hypo/salmon is going to be more tan/brown vs orange/red as a new born?

Another question I have is regarding my female. I just started pairing a month or so ago. And since then her attitude/feeding response has sky rocketed. Is this normal during early introductions/breeding?

Here are a few pics of my 1st attempt of breeding boas and individual shots. Sorry they aren't the best.

I am no expert but I have seen lots of Goo! LOL!

You will just kinda know when you see them.

The ones that are more crisp and clean looking will usually look better as they age.

They are in their baby greys so there isn't a lot of color in their body but more towards the tail. Look at high reds in the tail, high contrasting from the body to the saddle color. They wont look so dark and speckled with that underlying speckling.

Wish you the best with that pair!

Great Looking Hypos!!

That's a gorgeous salmon you've got there. You probably wont be able to go wrong in choosing a holdback from her. I don't hold back very many, but I like to pick two or three from a litter and see how they color up over the next year and then decide.

Thanks! I knew the moment I saw her she had to be mine lol. I'm planning on keeping at least one, maybe more, depending if I can get a snake building built and more caging.
