Third and Final Pyro Clutch

pyromaniac May 27, 2012 09:03 AM

Zafina laid 7 eggs starting around dusk and finishing late last night. I left them with her in the moss hide until this morning. They look not so pretty I am thinking because of the moss staining them. Usually I take the eggs out right away but it was late at night while she was still laying and I was ready for bed.

What do you all think?

Still a little damp from being buried deep in the nest. I hope they will be okay; she went to a lot of effort to produce this first clutch. She is smaller than the other females so her eggs seem a bit smaller, too. The one egg near the top is normal shaped, the camera angle makes it look weird. It was stuck to the other egg so that is how it is positioned.

Bob, congrats. IMHO, only 3 of those look to be fertile. The two to the farthest left and the horizontal one at the top. Usually the eggs will harden up shortly after being laid and they probably are not soft from the moist moss they are what I consider "Wet Bags" Don't throw them away until they start to stink or start leaking. Usually you will know in a few days to a week. I have had a few females lay them this year also. My 09 candy cane knoblochi did almost the same clutch yesterday. 5 total, 3 fertile and 2 wet bags

I went ahead and removed the sweaty looking ones.

Another odd thing, so far the female has not resumed eating. She did drink water, though. I am going to try feeding her again today. All my other females eat with enthusiasm the day after laying. She does not have any signs of retained eggs or slugs.

Just remember each one is different. I have a few that I will wait til they come out of the nesting area to feed. It takes a little time to re-coup from their labor.

Not worried anymore. She ate a bunch of pinkies this afternoon, and seems fine. She had been drinking water all along, so at least was not dehydrated. My three girls are all quite different in their response to laying their clutches.

This is what I had expected after they lay their eggs! And the next day, not several days as in Zafina's case. (This is Dotz last year after laying.)
