Something different

joecop May 27, 2012 09:05 PM

I have been fortunate to find a great spot for these this year. I have not seen any in thirty years! Anyway, the female was caught with folicles and now, having been with the male for a little while, looks like Oprah at a cheesecake buffet.

Better pic of male:

That's awesome, Joe!......That female sure is getting big and plump with eggs. Nice pics too!

Thanks Doug!! I will probably hold back most of the babies (should I get any that is) and then maybe next year get some of these out into the hobby. Not many MD mole kings around that I can see and I think that needs to be taken care of pronto!! I caught some way back when I was a teenager and have not seen any since then. I found a great spot on private property through a good friend of mine and discovered the mole kings were still to be found. Very docile animals too.

Yeah, that's really neat that you located some nice ones after all those years of not ever seeing any around in that area. I'm sure some folks will like owning some of that particular locale.

Good luck with getting a nice fertile clutch from her!

Ross
Have you ever gone or did you go this year to ARC?

I would be surprised if you haven't.

Observing them in a cage by themsleves with set temps and deciding when to feed is hardly natural or healthy for the snakes.

You are doing what suits you. which is fine, but its not about the animal, its about you. Your requirements.

No, I never have. I've never liked the big group thing when it comes to herping. I'm just weird when it comes to that. lol
-----

Bluerosy May 28, 2012 04:38 PM

This year they split up and were hitting a new range extension for rosys.

I heard conditions were not great. But it is always nice to get together with field herpers.

Every year i say i will go next year. I hope to get out there on year and hopefully see you there to!

Yeah, that would be cool. I'd rather take you out flipping for Cal kings. It would even be fun getting skunked in Long Beach. lol Me and Hubbs got skunked there, but its just cool herping in one of those last places left in the city.

I also herd them talking about hitting a new range. It was kind of colder, so who knows what happened. I'm waiting to here the report on localityrosys. They say Danny is the man. Maybe he found the boa in the new range.
-----

Bluerosy May 28, 2012 05:16 PM

yeah they have not said much about what Danny found. maybe there are some legality issues there.

Or maybe they just don't want to broadcast so that very tom, dick and harry drives out there.

Is the first part of june to late to flip in your spots in L.A.?

I might be out there.

Yeah, too dry that time of year. Normally March is the best month.

I think they are giving Danny the respect to announce what he found on his own. I'm sure he'll post something in the next two days. We'll also start hearing more about what everyone else found. It kind of sounds like they didn't do too good on the boas this year, but we'll see.

Congrats again Joe. Nice pics too!

Wow Joe, great finds man! Hope you get a ton of little ones this year. Be sure to let us know when you decide to put some offspring in the hobby. Those mole's and prairie's are some of the under-rated species of kings, IMHO.
-----

joecop May 28, 2012 12:58 PM

Thanks Jimmy. Both Prairie and moles are underated animals to say the least.

Thanks Dennis. With my temp experiments this year I need the w/c stuff to get good clutches it seems. Slugville around here!!!

That is sweet Joe! I'm sure there is a cool story to how you found the spot where they are. I will give you a shout later.

Joe,
Nice mole kings!! Did you catch the pair yourself?
Definitely interested in locale specific hatchlings if you get them to go full term.
How is everything else going? Still moving?
Brad Bauserman

joecop May 28, 2012 01:03 PM

Brad, looks like the move might not happen now. Market just too bad to sell our house. Yes, I caught both the male and female at the same location!! I am very excited about these as you just don't see them that often in MD.

Joe

foxturtle May 28, 2012 07:34 PM

GONE FISHING!!!

joecop May 28, 2012 08:10 PM

LOL. Thanks Gerard.. I do feel lucky, very lucky. I have only been more excited about a snake one time. That is when I found my screaming coastal zonata through Mitch Mulk's direction.

joecop May 28, 2012 08:08 PM

Yep Nick. I caught both at my spot in MD. (and a buddy I took there caught another pair as well that he is trying to breed). He just did not post them because he keeps a low profile and does not want questions about where he caught them, and certainly will not tell anyone. Top secret stuff!!

Joe

a153fish May 29, 2012 09:10 AM

They are very red! Especially the female, good luck!

Oh any luck on that double clutch Virginia?

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
